BRONX, N.Y. – Sophomore Josh Smutzer pitched a career-high seven innings en route to a 6-4 victory over No. 3 Saint Joseph's Friday night in the consolation final of the 2016 Atlantic 10 Championship at Houlihan Park.
The victory advances the Wildcats (28-25) to their first-ever championship round in program history, as Davidson will face No. 1 Rhode Island at 12 p.m. This also marks the first time a No. 6 seed will play for an Atlantic 10 baseball title.
If the 'Cats win the game, there will be a winner-take-all matchup for the league title at 3:30 p.m. Both games will be televised nationally on the American Sports Network, and can be viewed online at Atlantic10.com.
In just his third start of the season, Smutzer finished his career outing, holding the Hawks to just three runs – two earned – off seven hits with three strikeouts to improve to 4-1 on the season.
In addition to Smutzer, Westin Whitmire pitched the final two innings in relief and allowed just one run off one hit with three strikeouts for his ninth save of the season.
Davidson had an impressive day offensively as well, outhitting Saint Joseph's, 13-9. Five Wildcats recorded multiple hit performances with Jake Sidwell and Lee Miller leading the way with three hits apiece.
After Saint Joseph's (31-22) got on the board with a solo home run in the second, Davidson responded with six-straight runs in the next three innings.
Following back-to-back walks that put Jake Sidwell and Sam Foy on base, Brian Fortier singled through the left side that tied the score at one.
Davidson kept the momentum as two singles and a hit by pitch loaded the bases before two sacrifice flies and a single gave the 'Cats a 3-1 lead in the fourth.
Three more runs crossed in the fifth thanks to a lead-off, ground-ruled double from Lee Miller which sparked two more hits and a Saint Joseph's error as the Wildcats took a commanding 6-1 lead.
The Hawks recorded single runs in the sixth and seventh that chopped at the Davidson lead but it was not enough to spark a rally.
The Wildcats will return to the field tomorrow, May 28 to face of No. 1 seed Rhode Island at 12 p.m.
