DAVIDSON, N.C. — In a battle of cross-county rivals, the Davidson men's tennis team was unable to keep its season-high five-match winning streak going as Charlotte pulled out a 5-2 win Wednesday afternoon on the Davidson Tennis Courts.
Playing the first of three straight home games to close out the regular season, the Wildcats fell to 10-8 overall. The 49ers won their fourth straight, moving to 10-5, and won their fourth in the series to improve to 16-11 all-time.
The match started off in favor of the Wildcats, taking the doubles point for the eight time this year. The senior pair of Alex Howard and Evan Watkins nailed down a 6-1 win at No. 2 for their fifth victory of the season and halted a three-match skid. Then Artem Khrapko and Zack Zapatero sealed up the point with a 7-5 win at No. 3.
Seeing their season-best five-match doubles win streak come to a close was J.B. Gough and Shamael Chaudhry in a close 7-5 defeat.
Davidson was not able to carry the momentum over though to singles play, with Charlotte winning five of the six matches to secure the win.
David Hager was the lone 'Cat to win, netting a 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 3 to tie for the team lead with 11 singles wins.
Khrapko saw his three-match singles streak end after a 6-0, 6-4 defeat at No. 1, while Ricky Saad, who won his first two singles matches of the year over the weekend, dropped his first match at No. 4 by the score of 6-1, 7-5.
Davidson wraps up its regular season with matches this weekend against Appalachian State and College of Charleston, April 9-10.
