NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — Sophomore David Hager capped off a strong regular season by taking home one of the Atlantic 10 men's tennis final weekly awards when he was named co-player of the week with Richmond's Alexandre Felisa, as announced by the league office Tuesday.
The award was Davidson's second as a team this season and gave Hager his third career award overall after he was named A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week twice last year.
Hager finished off the regular season by going 3-0 at No. 3 singles last week in matches at home against Charlotte, Appalachian State and College of Charleston. The three wins pushed his record to a team-best tying 13-5 (5-1 at No. 3), while having gone 7-1 in his past eight matches.
The Edmond, Okla., native started the week by scoring one of two team points for the 'Cats against cross-county rival Charlotte by taking a 7-5, 6-3 win. Hager followed that up with another straight set victory of 6-2, 6-4 in a 6-1 team win over ASU.
He ended the week by coming back from dropping a tie-breaker in the first set, to score a 6-1 win in the next set and was up 2-1 when his CofC opponent was forced to retire.
Davidson (11-9) now gears up for the Atlantic 10 Tournament next week, April 14-17, at Boar's Head Sports Club in Charlottesville, Va.
