RICHMOND, Va. — Freshman Megan Scholvinck clinched the winning team point and Davidson won its season-best fifth straight match by pulling out a close 4-3 decision on the road against Atlantic 10-foe Richmond Tuesday afternoon.
Â
The Wildcats matched last year's season-high five-match win streak, improving to 8-2 overall. It was just their second win in 10 matches since 1988 against Richmond.
Â
The 'Cats also remained perfect in A-10 action at 3-0, the first time since 2008 while in the Southern Conference the 'Cats have opened league play perfect through three matches.
Â
Tied at 3-3 after the Spiders (4-4, 0-2 A-10) knotted it, Scholvinck won her first set 7-5, but dropped a 6-4 decision in the second set to force the final set. She raced out to a 3-0 lead and did not let up, sealing up the match win with a 6-3 victory, her fifth of the season.
Â
Anna Catharine Feaster and Ally Sexton won their fifth doubles match in a row, picking up a 7-5 tie-breaker win at No. 2 doubles, but it was the only win Davidson got as Richmond took an early 1-0 lead with wins at the other two spots.
Â
Sophomore Ava Todd, fresh off winning the league's player of the week earlier in the day, won her fifth straight singles match to improve to a team-best 8-2 with a solid 7-5, 6-3 decision at No. 2. Last year saw her rattle off a 16-match win streak.
Â
Elaina Cummer and Gabrielle Centenari earned the other two team points for the 'Cats. Cummer nailed down a 6-1, 6-3 victory at No. 4, running her record to 7-3. The freshman Centenari keep her hot streak going, with a hard-fought 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) triumph at No. 3 to pick up her sixth win of the year and fourth consecutive win. Â
Â
Davidson takes a 10-day break, returning home to host Campbell and Elon, March 11-12.
