DAVIDSON, N.C. - The Davidson women's track and field team will compete at the 2016 Atlantic 10 Indoor Track and Field Championship, held Feb. 20-21 at Mackal Fieldhouse on the campus of Rhode Island. Competition begins Saturday, Feb. 20 at 9 a.m. and continues Sunday, Feb. 21.
"We will be entering the A-10 Championships with a small, but talented group of athletes," said Director of Cross Country and Track and Field Jen Straub. "On the women's side, we're looking to score points in the relays, middle distance and distance events."
2015 Atlantic 10 Championships
Davidson made its inaugural appearance at the A-10 Championships a year ago, after joining the conference in July 2014.
Last season, the women's team broke five school records across the two-day event, finishing 12th overall. The Wildcats broke records in the 1,000, 5,000, 3,000, the distance medley relay and the 4x800 relay. Davidson earned a spot on the podium with third place finishes in the 4x800 and the distance medley relays. Erin Osment '15 raced her way to third in the 5,000 meter.
The VCU women's team won their first-ever indoor track title last season. Since 2011, four different teams have captured five conference championships.
Rewriting the Records
During the 2015-16 season, Davidson has set four new program records. Freshman Tori Long opened the season with a new mark in the 300, crossing in 43.67. Newcomer Caroline Yarbrough now owns the program record in the 3,000 with a time of 9:53.19. Junior Hannah Rieden broke her own record in the 800 after finishing in 2:14.77 at the HPU Team Challenge. The foursome of Rieden, Long, Ashlyn Gruber and Brigid Behrens bested the 4x400 relay record with a time of 4:00.00.
Best of the Best
Entering the Championship, Davidson owns nine top-20 times ranging across the events this weekend. In the half mile, Hannah Rieden's program best of 2:13.24 is good for sixth with senior Brigid Behrens (2:15.47) ranking 18th. Tori Long is 19th in the 400 with a season fast time of 58.80. In the pole vault, Megan Comstock ranks 13th after clearing 10'6". The 4x400 relay team of Rieden, Long, Behrens and Ashlyn Gruber, which owns the school record, ranks 10th in the A-10.
Last Time Out: High Point Team Challenge
Highlighted by program records in the 800 and the 4x400 relay, the Wildcats had a strong showing at its final regular season competition. Junior Hannah Rieden stopped the clock at 2:14.77 in the half mile to break her previous record of 2:15.83 set at this meet a year ago.
