WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Davidson junior Jacob Hostetler highlighted the Wildcat men's track and field team season opener, setting a new program record in the indoor 400-meter run at the JDL College Kickoff Classic Saturday.
Hostetler broke a nine-year-old record set by David Ritchie in 2007, placing fourth overall in 49.64 seconds. Ritchie's previous best was 49.97 seconds. Teammate George Williams also finished in the top-10, coming home in 50.45 seconds.
"Jacob Hostetler breaking the school record in 400-meter and running a significant personal record in his opener is a good indication that the hard work that he and his teammates have put in this fall will pay off in the future," said head coach Renny Waldron. "We have a lot of work to do as we head into the winter break, but we know our guys are up to the task and will continue to progress."
Hostetler and Williams joined up with teammates Sean Caveney and Garrett Nickelson to place fourth in the 4x400 meter relay, crossing the line in 3:23.55.
"Today was a solid opener for our guys. Although we didn't compete a complete squad, it did give us a good sense of where we are and let us know that we are headed in the right direction."
Senior Francis Corson opened the season in the mile and finished in 4:34.85, good for fifth overall. Freshman Alex Hazan made his indoor collegiate debut, placing ninth in the 3k (9:10.94).
The Wildcats will not compete again until Jan. 21 back at JDL.
