DAVIDSON, N.C. – With the fall semester coming to a close, Davidson baseball participated in one final event before preseason begins in January. The squad completed the second-annual Wildcat Challenge, a weeklong strength and conditioning affair testing the players' endurance, stamina, strength, and mental toughness.
Monday and Tuesday featured a variety of strength and weightlifting exercises, Wednesday brought the team to Cannon Natatorium for swimming races and rope climbing, and things wrapped up on Thursday with an obstacle course designed to test all four elements of the Challenge.
The three senior captains, right-handed pitcher Durin O'Linger, catcher Jake Sidwell, and first baseman Brian Fortier, joined classmate utility man Tyler Agard as the four team leaders, who each drafted players onto their respective squads.
Sidwell commanded the winning team, totaling 6,125 points, while the overall winner of the challenge was junior Andrew Born of Fortier's squad. Born collected 920 points individually, turning in the top scores on both the first and final nights of competition. A pair of sophomores rounded out the top individuals, with Justin Lebek registering 895 points, and pitcher Dan Spear recording 815.
Sidwell's team was represented by himself and Lebek, seniors Westin Whitmire and James Padley, juniors Alec Acosta, Evan Roberts, and Connor Gordon, sophomores Adrian Mayans and Allen Barry, and freshman Matt Frey.
The Wildcats will begin their 2017 campaign in mid-February, hosting Georgetown in a three-game series.
