NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Senior Emily Franklin will add another accolade to her resume to cap her standout senior season, as the 6'1 middle blocker was named to the Atlantic 10 All-Conference Second-Team, the league announced Thursday.
"I'm proud of Emily and the great season she's having," head coach Chris Willis said. "She's always been a natural blocker, and what I've been most impressed with is her improvement on the offensive side. As a senior, she'll be greatly missed next year, and I hope she has a few more games left this season."
Franklin has been ranked in the top three in the nation in blocking the entire season, and was named Co-Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 10 after a standout weekend of league play, where she recorded 18 total blocks, 31 kills, including a new career-high 17 during the 'Cats five-set thriller with George Mason. She also earned the title once in 2014.
The Charlotte, N.C., native is the first Wildcat to earn all-conference honors since Davidson joined the Atlantic 10; teammate and fellow blocker Sabrina Shepherd was named to the all-freshman team and Co-Rookie of the Year last season. Prior to Shepherd, the last time Davidson landed a player on an all-league squad was in 2013, when they were still members of the Southern Conference.
Franklin will exit the program in the top 10 in the record books in seven different categories, including third all-time in single-season hitting percentage, single-season solo blocks, and single-season total blocks.
Franklin is one of five total middle blockers to earn recognition between the first and second teams. She led the league in blocking and blocks per set the entire 2016 campaign, and was also ranked fifth in the league in hitting percentage.
Franklin and the Wildcats continue their season Friday, playing in their first ever Atlantic 10 Championship. Davidson faces Saint Louis in the quarterfinals, scheduled for 6:00 p.m. Friday.
