SAINT LOUIS – A dynamic third set wasn't enough to overcome superb hitting from Saint Louis, as Davidson volleyball dropped its final regular season match of the season 3-1 (19-25, 20-25, 25-21, 25-13).
The Wildcats slip to 10-18 (5-9 A-10), while Saint Louis improves to 16-13 overall (11-3 A-10). Despite the loss, Davidson's season will continue, as the squad will play in its first Atlantic 10 Tournament later next week.
Junior Kelly Friers led the Wildcats for the seventh time this season, totaling 10 kills. Sophomore Ciera Cockrell added seven, and junior Grace Schlicht, making her first appearance of the season, turned in a .429 hitting efficiency and a team-high four blocks.
A six-point rally- in large part to three service aces from Mason Rooney- in the opening stanza looked to put the Wildcats in good shape until the Billikens came within two and then used their own rally, registering eight unanswered points to swing the momentum in their favor and steal the set 25-19.
Saint Louis carried control from the first frame into the second, using three separate four-point sequences to take a 2-0 lead in the match. The 'Cats were within reach late in the set, down 21-20, before the Billikens used their final rally to secure a lead heading into intermission, taking the set 25-20.
Davidson came out of the break blazing, taking a small two-point lead and turning it into an overwhelming margin, leading by as many as nine points. From the 6-5 mark, the 'Cats went on to collect nine of the next 11 points, capitalizing on several Billikens' miscues and hard-hitting attacks-turned-kills from Cockrell. With a steady 20-13 lead late, Saint Louis inched back, coming within two points before the 'Cats closed it out 25-21 and forced a fourth frame.
Saint Louis delivered a standout set from the service line in what was ultimately the final frame, as the Billikens recorded five aces en route to a 25-13 set win, and 3-1 match victory. The team was led by the nation's leader in kills and hitting percentage, Danielle Rygelski, who recorded 26 at a .417 efficiency.
The Wildcats return to the Gateway City next weekend for the A-10 Championships, their first postseason berth since joining the league in 2014. Davidson will enter the tournament as the sixth seed and face Saint Louis once again, in the first quarterfinal of the tournament, as announced by the league Sunday afternoon. Davidson and SLU will face off at 7:00 p.m. Eastern time.
