CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Davidson women's cross country team finished the 2016 campaign with an 18th place finish at the NCAA Southeast Regional Championship Meet at Panorama Farms Friday morning.
The Wildcats, led by junior Laurel Sheffield, registered 468 points. NC State claimed the regional title, while Coastal Carolina freshman Annie Bothma took home individual honors. Sheffield paced the 'Cats for the first time this season, completing the 6k championship course in 22:14.2.
"The girls ran tough today! We ran a 6k average of 22:24, 38 seconds faster than last year, and as a result moved up to 18th," said head coach Jen Straub. "Laurel Sheffield had a breakthrough race and led the Wildcats to a strong race!"
The next three Davidson runners came through the chute bunched up and led by freshman Susannah Cate in 22:21.3. Cate edged out sophomore teammate Caroline Yarbrough (22:21.5.), who was two spots ahead of rookie Maddie Hunter (22:24.0). Senior Hayden Bates rounded out the scoring contingency with a time of 22:39.7.
All seven Wildcats covered the 6k course in under 23 minutes, a feat only Yarbrough accomplished last season at the same site. Junior's Sarah Sears (22:41.6) and Caroline Turner (22:43.1) were the final 'Cats to cross the line in an all-around solid performance.
"Susannah Cate and Maddie Hunter continue to run strong as well. The team has gotten faster as a group in every meet this season, so I'm excited about the future of this program," said Straub.
