DAVIDSON, N.C. – After an October spent on further development and fine tuning of skills, Davidson baseball will conclude its fall season with the Red and Black World Series, beginning this weekend with games Friday (4:30 p.m.), Saturday (8:30 a.m.), and Sunday (1:00 p.m.), and concluding Tuesday (5:30 p.m.).
All games will be held at the newly renovated Wilson Field, and times are probable but subject to change.
The Red team already carries a 1-0 advantage entering the weekend after their 11-7 victory last Sunday. The Red 'Cats had five players with two hits or more, led by junior Andrew Born's 3-for-3 day with a double and two runs scored and the bullpen allowed just one run across five and a third innings.
The Black team took an early lead, plating six runs in the top of the first, before an explosive and productive eighth inning from a pair of freshmen gave Red the lead. Freshman Matt Frey led off the inning with a game-tying solo shot, and classmate Brett Centracchio blasted a grand slam five batters later to take the lead and add insurance.
Leading the offense for Black was junior Cam Johnson, who went 3-for-6, and fellow outfielders Cam Marshall and transfer Greg Lowe each collected two hits.
Relief pitcher Connor Gordon threw possibly the best outing of the day for either team, retiring all three batters he faced, including a strikeout.
The Red team consists of seniors Tyler Agard, Will Robertson, Jake Sidwell, and Cody White, juniors Born and Josh Smutzer, sophomores Andrew Ashur, Allen Barry, Max Bazin, Austin Leonard, Adrian Mayans, and Casey Sutherland, and freshmen Centracchio, Frey, Alex Fedje-Johnson, Jaret LaCagnina, and ZJ Zabinski.
The Black team roster includes redshirt senior Durin O'Linger, seniors Brian Fortier, Marshall, Lukas Pracher, and Westin Whitmire, juniors Alec Acosta, Gordon, Johnson, Evan Roberts, and Josh Smutzer, sophomores Ward Coleman, Josh Hudson, Justin Lebek, Sam Reinertsen, Lowe, and Dan Spear, and freshmen Alex Chan, Charlie King, and Zach Nussbaum.
Davidson baseball will begin its 2017 campaign in mid-February, hosting Georgetown for a three-game series.
