RICHMOND, Va. — The annual Atlantic 10 Women's Basketball media day took place Tuesday, Oct. 25, and junior Mackenzie Latt earned preseason honors, while head coach Michele Savage of Davidson met with local and national media at the Richmond Marriott.
The day consisted of a luncheon and then breakout sessions with all the media as well as the conference. Savage is entering her seventh year at the helm of the Wildcat program as they begin their third year in the A-10.
In addition, the league released its preseason rankings and all-conference teams along with an all-defensive squad. Latt was named to the preseason third team, while Davidson was picked to finish 13th in the standings. The Wildcats return eight letterwinners from last year's team that went 11-19 overall and 5-11 in league play.
A forward from Kalamazoo, Mich., Latt had a strong sophomore campaign last season and earned the team's MVP honor. She averaged a personal-best 14.2 points a game and hauled in over six rebounds, pacing the team with 193 rebounds overall, while shooting 46 percent from the floor. Latt's 187 made field goals were the fifth-most in a Wildcat single season.
Latt has a shot this year at reaching the 1,000-point club, sitting at 774 career points. Her 12.9 career scoring average ranks ninth-best in the Wildcat record books. Through her first two seasons, Latt has tallied 45 career double-figure scoring games and 13 double-doubles.
Davidson begins its season with a trip to Michigan, Nov. 11-13, facing Big Ten-foe Michigan State Friday night and then finishing out the trip at Western Michigan Sunday.
Saint Louis was picked as the 2016-17 Atlantic 10 Conference favorite. The Billikens, which tied for the regular season title in 2015-16, garnered nine first-place votes for a total of 191 points. Led by junior Jackie Kemph, the reigning A-10 Co-Player of the Year, along with teammate Sadie Stipanovich, a fellow preseason all-conference selection, Saint Louis finished 26-8 overall last season and 13-3 in the A-10. Coach Lisa Stone led SLU to the third round of the WNIT and the program's second-ever appearance in postseason play.
Dayton and Duquesne tied for second in the 2016-17 A-10 Preseason Poll with 166 points, with the Dukes, the 2016 A-10 Championship Runner-ups, receiving three first-place votes.
Two-time defending Atlantic 10 Champion, George Washington, was picked to finish fourth, garnering 157 points and two first-place votes. The Colonials were followed by VCU in fifth with 148 points. Fordham finished sixth in the poll with 117 points and Richmond received 108 points to finish seventh in the voting.
Saint Joseph's (94 points), Rhode Island (78 points), and St. Bonaventure (68 points) finished eighth, ninth and 10th in the poll. George Mason, La Salle, Davidson and Massachusetts rounded out the preseason rankings, respectively.
The 2017 A-10 Championship will feature a new, enhanced format, with six first-round games being on campus sites before heading to Richmond, Friday through Sunday, for the quarterfinals, semifinals and championship final games. The top two championship seeds will receive a bye, with the remainder of the field facing off in games hosted by seeds 3-8 for the first round. The first round will take place on the Saturday and Sunday prior to the weekend of the quarterfinals, semifinals and final. In 2017 the first round will be Feb. 25-26 with the three final rounds being played March 3-5.
