BRONX, N.Y. – Jannik Loebe converted a pair of penalty kicks, including one in the 96th minute, to lift Fordham over Davidson, 3-2 (ot) in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Sunday afternoon at Coffey Field.
Playing in their third straight overtime contest and fourth (0-3-1) of 2016, the Wildcats fall to 3-11-1 overall and 1-4-1 in league play, while the Rams improve to 6-5-3 and 3-1-1.
After Jon Creel put the Wildcats up 1-0 with his second collegiate goal off an assist from fellow midfielder Cort Coxhead, Davidson was whistled for a foul in the box, setting up Loebe's equalizing PK at the 25:39 mark.
Creel also had a one v. one chance but was unable to connect.
Christian Fechter, the Wildcats' second-leading scorer, put his club back in front less than 11 minutes later with an unbelievable strike from outside the box.
Just prior to intermission, Fordham's Matthew Lewis scored off a header to even the score at the break, 2-2.
The Rams finished with a 16-13 edge in shots, while Davidson's Andrew Kenneson led both goalkeepers with eight saves.
Up Next
Davidson will enjoy a six-day break before wrapping up its home slate with a 6 p.m. "Senior Night" contest against VCU on Saturday at Alumni Stadium.
Coach Spear's Postgame Comments
"A tough result after another good effort and performance. It's hard because overtime losses determined by sudden death goals don't provide or explain the value of what you put in.
Fordham is talented and came back after being down twice. I don't remember ever conceding two penalties in one game.
Jon Creel was very dangerous tonight and got behind their defense three times.
Christian's goal is a highlight shot, something he and his family will never forget - especially nice since this was practically a homecoming game.
The one thing I know about this team and staff is that we will keep moving forward. We have a week to get some guys back from injury and to prepare for VCU, where the pride and passion for Senior Day will be an inspiration."
