DAVIDSON, N.C. – Joe Saad netted his first goals of the season, including one in the 93rd minute to lift league-leading Saint Louis over Davidson, 2-1, in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Wednesday evening at Alumni Stadium.
With the win, the Billikens improve to 6-4-3 overall and remain unbeaten in conference play at 5-0-0. The Wildcats fall to 3-10-1 and 1-3-1.
Trailing 1-0 late in the contest, Davidson's Nathan Marder put away a loose ball in the box to tie the score and force overtime. It was the junior defender's first goal of the year and second of his career.
Just over two minutes into the extra session, Saadiq Mohammed and Anthony Brown set up Saad's golden goal.
Shortly after the Wildcats' Maxi Pragnell missed wide with an attempt, Saad provided the game's first score with a shot past the diving Andrew Kenneson at the 63:37 mark.
Davidson held a 4-2 edge in shots at intermission, including attempts from Pragnell and Nile Chau that missed just high of frame.
Despite the setback, the Wildcats had the better scoring opportunities while holding an 8-5 advantage in shots and corner kicks, 7-4.
Up Next
Davidson will travel to Fordham for a 4 p.m. kickoff Sunday afternoon.
Coach Spear's Postgame Comments
"Credit to Saint Louis, which keeps finding ways to win close matches. It started the first game of the year at Wake Forest and it has accelerated into conference play.
I truly believed before and during the game that this would be our night. So I am gutted for our guys because in many ways they deserved more than what they got.
To only allow five shots to the current top team in the A-10 – and just six last match vs. UMass – underlines the improvements through this season.
These guys have been so close to fully rounding the corner in the last three weeks. We have to keep striving, keep competing, and keep believing until the final whistle of each match and the final whistle of the season."
