DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson and Massachusetts played to a 1-1 (2ot) draw in Atlantic 10 men's soccer action Saturday evening at Alumni Stadium.
The 'Cats move to 3-9-1 overall and 1-2-1 in league play, while UMass sits at 4-6-3, 1-0-2.
Maxi Pragnell, the league's second-leading scorer, netted the Wildcats' lone goal off a cross from fellow tri-captain Christian Fechter in the 59th minute. It was Pragnell's seventh strike of the season and 14th of his career.
Coming off a two-goal performance in Davidson's 2-1 win at Saint Joseph's earlier in the week, Pragnell just missed another multiple-goal effort, but his attempt 10 minutes into the second half hit the right post.
Just prior to Pragnell's near miss, Jaylen Thompson and fellow midfielder Cort Coxhead had consecutive scoring chances.
With just over eight minutes to play, the Wildcats were whistled for a handball in the box, which set up Ty Goncalves' penalty kick and third goal of the year.
Davidson finished with a 9-6 edge in shots and 6-5 advantage in corner kicks.
Up Next
Davidson will conclude its brief homestand Wednesday evening with a 7 p.m. kickoff against league foe Saint Louis.
Coach Spear's Postgame Comments
"A win was surely the aim tonight but a tie and a point in the conference standings will have to do. UMass is a tough team to break down – they have shown that with three shutouts entering tonight's game. They defend and press with so much energy and conviction.
Our goal was great in the vision and pass from Christian and then an exquisite first touch and finish from Maxi. It was a combination of class and precision and composure to give us the lead.
I think we needed to keep the ball on the ground more, connect more simple passes and add a touch more quality and decision making in the final third to open them up more. Once the game got more direct, it played in to their strategy as they game got stretched.
Despite the penalty kick, we defended well – allowing just shot six shots is surely a season low. And no shots were on frame, except the PK. We handled crosses and set pieces well; a clean sheet shutout would have been apt."
