DAVIDSON, N.C. – Davidson volleyball saw its three-game winning streak snapped Friday in Baker Sports Complex, suffering a sweep at the hands of Saint Louis (9-12, 4-2 A-10) by scores of 25-16, 29-27, 25-14.
Sophomore Sabrina Shepherd recorded a career-best .615 hitting efficiency as she led the 'Cats with nine kills. Senior Emily Franklin took sole possession of 10th place in program history with two solo blocks on the evening, bringing her career total to 25. Junior Kelly Friers chipped in seven kills, and senior Mikayla Derochie dished 27 assists in the loss.
Saint Louis was paced by senior Danielle Rygelski's 29 kills. Rygelski tops the nation in multiple offensive categories, and was one slam shy of recording her fourth 30-kill contest.
The 'Cats stayed with the Billikens in the opening stanza until Saint Louis collected eight consecutive points late in the set, taking it 25-16.
The Wildcats held a 20-13 lead in the second game, until the Billikens used a series of four-point and five-point rallies to catch up and take control of the set. Davidson, looking for set point at 24-20, committed three straight miscues before Saint Louis regained the momentum and went on to take the set, 29-27. The final nine plays of the frame saw four tied scores, with Rygelski each time firing off a kill to give favor to the Billikens.
SLU continued with its aggressive force following the intermission, going out to an early six point lead and only increasing it from there, securing the set and match at 25-14.
Davidson returns to action Sunday, welcoming league leaders (RV) Dayton to Baker. The Flyers have just one loss on the season, and were selected as preseason favorites to win the Atlantic 10.
