DAVIDSON, N.C. — The Davidson women's tennis team gears up for the Spring season this weekend when they play host to UNCG Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m. in the Knobloch Tennis Center.
The Wildcats were originally to begin the season Saturday vs. Gardner-Webb, but due to the winter storm that hit the area, the match has been canceled and will be played at a different date.
Entering their second year in the Atlantic 10, the Wildcats are looking to continue their success from a year ago under second-year head coach Sara Anundsen. Replacing former head coach Caroline Price last year, Anundsen guided Davidson to its best season since 2010 as well as a very successful transition from the Southern Conference to the A-10.
Davidson and UNCG will be playing each other for the 27th time, a series that dates back to 1984. The 'Cats hold a 15-11 advantage in the all-time series, but are looking to halt a five-match losing streak. They dropped a close 4-3 deicison last year in Greensboro, N.C.
In anticipation of the 2016 season, below is a look at the Season Preview ....
The Davidson women's tennis program begins its second year under the guidance of head coach Sara Anundsen. After 32 years under the guidance of Caroline Price, who retired in June of 2014 with 422 career wins, the Wildcats welcomed a new leader last year and it was quite a debut for Anundsen. Not only did she help the Wildcats succesfully transition to the Atlantic 10, but she led them to its best season since 2010 with a 12-10 record and a 3-2 mark in league play.
The Wildcats' 12 wins were the most since a 15-win campaign in 2010 and they reached the quarterfinals in their first year in the A-10.
This year's club will be looking to take another step toward the program's first-ever league title as Davidson brings back all of its talent. Leading the way is the return
of all six starters, including A-10 all-performers Elaina Cummer, Anna Catharine Feaster and Ava Todd. In all, eight of the Wildcats nine letterwinners return with the addition of two newcomers, and it all adds up to what coach Anundsen and the Wildcats hope to be another successful season.
Singles
Davidson finished with an impressive 76 total singles wins last year as a team, 19 of which came against Atlantic 10 foes. It was the third straight 50-plus win season. Ava Todd (19), Anna Catharine Feaster (16) and Elaina Cummer (10) each reached the double-digit win total. The Wildcats return their entire starting lineup.
•Senior Elaina Cummer: Three-year starter ... the Wildcats' main No. 1 singles player as a junior last year, going 8-9 and finishing with a 10-11 record overall ... earned Atlantic 10 Performer of the Week honors, Feb. 11 ... named to the A-10 All-Second Team ... sported a 2-3 record vs. Atlantic 10 foes ... matched personal-best with a four-match win streak ... owns 27 career singles victories, including a combined 20 the past two seasons.
•Senior Courtney McCray: Won first collegiate singles match with a solid 6-2, 6-3 victory at Brevard College last year.
•Junior Jenna Brunner: Played mainly at No. 4 and 5 singles during second year, finishing with a 9-10 record ... earned Davidson's first-ever Atlantic 10 weekly award, grabbing the A-10 Performer of the Week, Feb. 3 ... sported a 4-3 record at No. 5, while going 5-6 at No. 4 singles ... had a 3-2 record in Atlantic 10 singles matches ... has collected 20 career singles wins.
•Junior Sarah Stein: A regular in the starting rotation as a sophomore, playing in 17 singles matches ... was the Wildcats' main No. 3 and 4 singles player, going a combined 8-8 at those spots, a personal-best for wins ... registered a solid 8-3 record at No. 3 ... finished 3-1 vs. Atlantic 10 foes ... ran off a personal-best four-match win streak during the season.
•Sophomore Anna Catharine Feaster: Had an outstanding freshman campaign for Davidson, earning a spot on the Atlantic 10 All-First Team ... also was named A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week three times throughout the season ... given the team's Coach's Award ... was the Wildcats' main No. 2 singles player, finishing the season 16-6 overall (4-1 vs. A-10), with a 13-4 record at No. 2 ... helping the freshman on her way to the 16 wins was a pair of winning streaks, a five-match streak at the beginning of the season and a season-high seven-match streak midway through the year.
•Sophomore Ally Sexton: Enjoyed a nice debut season as a freshman for Davidson, going 5-5 in singles action ... played mainly No. 5 and 6 singles ... closed the season out scoring a pair of straight set wins over St. Bonaventure and Fordham in the A-10 Tournament.
•Sophomore Cassidy Shell: Went 7-5 in singles action during freshman year ... opened the year winning five of first seven collegiate matches ... ran off a three-match win streak at home ... six of the seven total wins came at home.
•Sophomore Ava Todd: Paced Davidson with a tremedous freshman season, going a team-best 19-3 in singles, including a perfect 5-0 in Atlantic 10 play ... named to the A-10 All-Second Team with Cummer ... won the A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week award three times and grabbed the performer of the week award once ... honored with the team's Most Valuable Player award ... assisting her 19-win season was a 16-match win streak ... the streak was the longest since Kelsey Linville ran off a 13-match streak as a sophomore in 2005 ... the freshman played mainly three different singles positions, going 7-2 at No. 3, 5-0 at No. 4 and 6-1 at No. 5.

Doubles
Davidson's doubles teams finished the 2015 season with 38 wins in 63 matches, netting eight of those victories vs. A-10 foes. The Wildcats used the same starting
doubles lineup in all but three matches last year. They also return every player from all three of their main doubles teams.
• No. 1 position: The duo of Brunner and Cummer return after sporting a 9-10 record at the top doubles spot for the 'Cats ... they went 2-3 vs. the A-10 ... the pair opened the year winning their first four matches vs. No. 57 Virginia Tech, Arkansas State, Wofford and Gardner-Webb.
• No. 2 position: With a very strong 17-5 record at the No. 2 spot, Feaster and Sexton return and seek to continue their great success together ... they closed the season with an impressive seven-match win streak ... in addition, the duo opened the year on a seven-match win streak, starting with a 6-4 victory over No. 57 Virginia Tech.
• No. 3 position: Davidson's third doubles team of Stein and Todd played 17 matches together ... they recorded a 10-7 record ... the duo won three of their last four matches to close out the season ... overall, the 'Cats' No. 3 doubles team went a combined 13-9.
The Schedule
For the first time since 2011, Davidson will open the season at home. It plays Gardner-Webb, Jan. 23, as part of a five-match homestand on its brand new home tennis courts. The Wildcats will also face former SoCon foes UNCG, Furman and Western Carolina along with USC-Upstate during the stretch. Despite just two wins all-time against Furman, the 'Cats are a combined 59-13 against the other four opponents.
After a road match at East Carolina (Feb. 13) and a home date vs. Wintage (Feb. 21), Davidson will play the first of three straight Atlantic 10 opponents on the road. It opens against George Mason and George Washington, Feb. 27-28, before going to Richmond to start the month of March. Last year saw the Wildcats go 2-1 against those three teams, taking 6-1 decisions at home vs. Mason and GW, while falling 6-1 to the Spiders.
Two more conference road matches follow later, March 19-20, at Duquesne and Saint Joseph's. Davidson captured another 6-1 decision vs. the St. Joe's Hawks a year ago, but did not face the Dukes. The two schools have not met since 2002, with the Wildcats holding a 2-0 record in the all-time series.
Rounding out its league matches is a March 25th date vs. Dayton at home. This will be the first meeting between both schools.
Davidson closes out the year on a five-match road swing. Stops include at Towson, James Madison, cross-county rival Charlotte, Wofford and Appalachian State. The Wildcats have faced its cross-county rival 29 times, owning a 17-12 all-time record. They took a 4-1 decision a season ago vs. the 49ers.
Davidson has dominated the two series vs. former SoCon foes the Terriers and the Mountianeers. It holds a 23-2 lead against Wofford, including a 6-1 victory last year. Despite falling in a close 4-3 decision at home last year to ASU, Davidson still leads the all-time series 23-7.
The A-10 Tournament takes place April 21-24 in Mason, Ohio at the Lindner Family Tennis Center. For the third year in a row, VCU won the league tournament after a 4-0 win over third-seeded UMass last year in the championship match.
Prior to VCU's back-to-back-to-back tournament titles, Richmond had won the A-10 Tournament nine of the past 11 years, including four straight years in a row from 2004-2007 and 2009-2012, with Temple winning the other two seasons, 2003 and 2008.
