
Davidson Defeats ECU 3-2 to Win Wildcat Classic

DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team posted a 3-0 record at the 2015 Wildcat Classic after sweeping Presbyterian 3-0 in its first game, before taking down ECU 3-2. It marks the first time since 2013 the 'Cats have posted 3-0 record at their home tournament.
Mikayla Derochie, Sabrina Shepherd and Mason Rooney were named to the all-tournament team following the win. Derochie finished the weekend with 17 kills and 47 assists. Shepherd registered 25 kills and a .452 hitting percentage. Rooney tallied two double-doubles en route to 30 kills and a .569 hitting percentage and 52 assists.
Against ECU, Shepherd and Mason tallied double figure kills to pace the offense. Shepherd contributed a team-high 14 strikes, while Rooney added 12 of her own to go along with 27 assists. Defensively, Layne Doctson and Morgan Shannon led the charge with 21 and 20 digs respectively, while Deorchie finished with five blocks.
Davidson sprinted out to a two set lead over ECU in the final game of the two-day event. Davidson held a 20-16 advantage in the opening frame, which featured nine ties and three lead changes, but a kill from Rooney gave the Wildcats the set, 25-22. Davidson never trailed in the second set as it rolled to a 25-18 victory. Shepherd's five kills and Rooney's nine assists helped pace the offense. Doctson contributed to the defense as she notched five digs.
ECU responded in the third as the Pirates opened up a 10-7 lead midway through thanks to two service aces. Davidson brought the score within two, but ECU rattled off four straight points to take the set, 25-19.
The Pirates used its momentum from the third set to sprint out to a comfortable 15-8 lead in the fourth. The Wildcats remained close and eventually brought the score within two, 23-21, but it wasn't enough as the Pirates persevered to take the set, 25-21.
In the fifth and final set, Davidson used kills from Cockrell and Sarah Fink to go out in front, 14-11. ECU fended off match point with a kill from McRae, but Shepherd put on away to give Davidson the set, 15-12.
In the first match of the day, Davidson downed Presbyterian, 3-0. Rooney continued her stellar play, recording her first career double-double with 11 kills and 15 assists. The rookie hit .786 and added four digs. Derochie contributed six kills and 11 assists, while Kylie Bishopp tacked on four kills.
Davidson's defense was strong in the victory, limiting Presbyterian to a 0.43 hitting percentage and forcing the Blue Hose to commit 26 errors. The Wildcats registered eight total blocks. Cockrell and Bishopp totaled three stops to help lead the charge as Morgan Shannon chipped in 12 digs.
The Wildcats took control of the first set early using a 6-3 run midway through to secure the win. Presbyterian held an 11-9 edge in the second, but Davidson rallied to close the frame out on a 6-0 spurt. Davidson pulled away midway through the third and used a 7-4 run in the waning moments to secure the victory.
Davidson returns to action Sept. 8 with a trip to Elon.
