RICHMOND, Va. – Behind freshman Caroline Yarbrough and sophomore Allison Cheeseman, the Davidson women's cross country team raced to a second-place finish at the Richmond Invitational, Saturday morning.
"It was a great first race for the team, and in particular our two front runners," said Director of Cross Country and Track & Field, Jen Straub. "We need to shore up the back, but overall it was a solid effort."
Davidson's top performance of the day came from Yarbrough. Running with the front pack throughout the race, the Greensboro, N.C., native culminated a strong day with a second-place showing, finishing with a time of 11:16.4 in the two-mile run.
Cheeseman was the next through the finishing shoot. Cheeseman's time of 11:23.6 earned her fifth place.
A pair of sophomores completed the Davidson's top-12 finishes. Sierra Ponthier and Sarah Sears captured 10th and 11th with times just two seconds apart, led by Ponthier at 11:41.7.
Junior Hayden Bates was the next runner to finish, crossing the line in 11:52.2 in 15th place. Not far behind, coming in 20th place was Ashlyn Gruber. Gruber covered the course in 11:55.5.
The Wildcats tallied 39 points for second place. The Spiders won the Richmond Invitational with 21 points.
Davidson returns to action Sept. 19, with a trip to Nashville, Tenn., to compete at the Commodore Classic.
