DAVIDSON, N.C. — After a weather delay that lasted almost 2 hours, Davidson and former conference-rival Wofford played to a 2-2 draw in men's soccer action Friday evening at Alumni Stadium.
Despite giving up a late goal in regulation, the Wildcats extended their home-unbeaten streak to 12 straight, while moving to 1-0-1 on the season.
"Pulling back from behind again set us up for another win, but Wofford would not go away," said Davidson head coach Matt Spear.
Trailing 2-1 with 4:29 remaining in the contest, the Terriers' Matthew Aurednik forced overtime with a header just inside the far post, off a long centering pass from Nicky Watson.
"Wofford gave us a real battle. They thrive on set pieces, crosses and direct play. Facing that style will help us mature."
Davidson had two great scoring chances in the first overtime, including a left-footed attempt from Maxi Pragnell that missed just wide.
Matt Pacifici finished with a game-high four saves for the Wildcats, who held a slim 13-11 edge in shots and 9-8 advantage in corners.
Connor Davis put Wofford (2-0-1) ahead 1-0, 12:24 into the match with a header off a Jonathan Dean corner kick.
Davidson wasted little time erasing the early deficit as Valeriy Sviderskiy found the back of the net less than eight minutes later off a through ball from his fellow forward Pragnell. In addition to it being Sviderskiy's 17th career strike, the assist was Pragnell's third on the young season.
"Maxi impacts the game, even without scoring, as he's so good at finding the ball between the seams and playing teammates in. And it's important for Val's confidence to keep his scoring touch," Spear commented.
Shortly after checking into his first game in more than a year, senior Alec Rotunda set up Christian Fechter with a back heel flick to put Davidson in front, 2-1, in the 76th minute.
"We are all so happy that Alec made such a pivotal pass for Christian's goal. It was Alec's first regular game since two seasons ago. He has been incredibly consistent with his attitude, desire and commitment to the program. And Christian took his chance really well. A beautiful goal," said Coach Spear.
