Late Goal Lifts Davidson Over William & Mary, 1-0
9/27/2015 2:59:00 PM | Field Hockey
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – It came down to the wire for Davidson and William & Mary, but with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest, junior Katherine English flipped what was the eventual game winner into the cage to give the Wildcats a 1-0 win over the Tribe, Sunday afternoon. Davidson improves to 4-5 overall, while William & Mary falls to 4-6 overall.
The lone goal of the contest, a 59th minute strike from English off a penalty corner, counted as her second of the season, Sophomore Hannah Fisher inserted the ball to senior Anna Davis, who found the stick of English. English rocketed a shot near post past Meredith Savage to give Davidson a 1-0 edge.
The first half progressed slowly, with neither side fully taking advantage of opportunities. William & Mary earned its fair share of penalty corners, but the Wildcat defense, and senior backstop Emily Leytham, kept things quiet. The two sides entered the break with no score.
The intensity continued throughout the second half, but Davidson's defense stood tall as William & Mary was unable to capitalize on its opportunity.
In the goal for the Wildcats, Emily Leytham turned away three shots to register her third shutout of the season.
Davidson returns to the field for a two-game road swing at Saint Francis and Lock Haven, Oct. 2-4.
