‘Cats Trek to Saint Francis, Lock Haven For A-10 Contests

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Looking to extend its two-game winning streak, the Davidson field hockey team takes to the road for a pair of Atlantic 10 contests. The Wildcats will visit conference rival Saint Francis on Friday, Oct. 2 at 3 p.m., followed by a noon showdown with Lock Haven on Sunday, Oct. 4.
About Davidson
The Wildcats enter the weekend riding a two-game win streak. Davidson owns a 5-4 overall record and a 2-0 mark in the Atlantic 10 conference. With its five victories on the year, Davidson has already surpassed last season's mark of three wins.
Last Time Out
The Wildcats are coming off a pair of dominant performances last weekend, shutting out VCU and William & Mary on the road. Davidson's offense has found its stride of late, scoring three goals against VCU and a goal against William & Mary.
Becca Jones began the scoring for Davidson midway through the first frame. The 56th minute saw Davidson increase its lead to 2-0, as Jones against found her scoring touch. Anna Davis padded the Wildcats lead late in the second to secure the win for the Wildcats.
Against William & Mary, Katherine English flipped what was the eventual game-winner in the game with just over 10 minutes remaining in the contest to give Davidson a 1-0 victory.
Spread The Wealth
In total, nine Wildcats have at least a point this season, led by Anna Davis's 12 (4g, 4a) and Melissa Funsten's 10 (5g). Becca Jones has found the back of the net three times to round out Davidson's leading scorers. Davidson has tallied 18 goals, three more than last season's total.
In Between The Pipes
In the cage, senior Emily Leytham has controlled many games for the Wildcats, earning three shutout victories this year. In nine starts, Leytham has accumulated 34 saves while allowing 12 goals, for a .739 save percentage and a 1.84 goals allowed per game average.
Leytham's save percentage ranks second in the Atlantic 10 and 16th in the nation, while her goals against average is good for third in the conference and 16th nationally.
Funsten Time
Senior captain Melissa Funsten has made an impact on both sides of the ball. The Raleigh, N.C., native is Davidson's top-scorer finding the back of the net five times. Funsten has also registered three defensive saves to lead the team, while ranking second in the conference and tied for sixth in the country.
Where we stand
Davidson and Richmond are tied for first in the Atlantic 10 standings with 2-0 mark. Saint Joseph's and VCU sit tied for third with a 2-1 record, while UMass (1-1) is in fifth place. Lock Haven (1-2), La Salle (1-2), Saint Francis (0-1) and Saint Louis (0-3) round out the bottom of the conference.
Scouting Saint Francis (4-4, 0-1 Atlantic 10)
Saint Francis, which enters the weekend 4-4, 0-1 in conference play, has won three of its last four contests. The Red Flash most recently dropped a hard-fought 2-1 overtime battle at VCU to open conference play.
Seven different players have scored, three of which have at least two tallies for the Red Flash. Selena Adamshick leads the charge with eight goals and two assists for 18 points. She's followed closely by Irene Fritschy's five goals and three assists. Brianna Govia has scored two goals.
Samantha Zeiders has started every game for the Red Flash in 2015, recording 33 saves, while allowing just 12 goals. The senior has already posted four shutouts this season, allowing just an average of just 1.42 goals per game in the cage.
Scouting Lock Haven (9-2, 1-2 Atlantic 10)
Lock Haven rattled off six straight wins to open the 2015 season before suffering its first setback against Richmond, 1-0. The Bald Eagles enter the weekend with a 9-2 record overall and a 1-2 mark in conference play.
Senior forward Rachel Valentine leads Lock Haven with 19 points on nine goals and one assist. Valentine is averaging 0.82 goals per game, which is ranked 14th in the nation and first in the A-10. Freshman Alyscia Smith has contributed three goals, good for second on the team, while four players have registered two goals.
Maddie Wagenfeld and Paige Stuppy have split time in net for the Bald Eagles. Wagenfeld has registered 15 saves to own a .750 save percentage. Stuppy has recorded two shutouts and owns a .692 save percentage.
