RICHMOND, Va. – Junior Becca Jones scored the first two goals of the game, leading the Davidson field hockey team to a 3-0 shutout at Atlantic 10 rival VCU Friday night. Senior Anna Davis recorded her fifth goal of the season in the victory.
With the victory, Davidson improves to 4-4 overall and 2-0 in A-10 play, while VCU falls to 2-6 overall and 1-1 in conference action.
Davidson and VCU were even with six shots apiece, while the Wildcats held an 8-5 advantage in penalty corners. Emily Leytham earned her second shutout of the season, registering five saves.
Jones began the scoring for Davidson midway through the first frame, slapping home a nice feed from Davis to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead. The 56th minute saw Davidson increase its lead to 2-0, as Jones again found her scoring touch. Davis planted her first score in the back of the cage late in the second half to secure the win for the Wildcats.
Davidson returns to action Sunday with a nonconference tilt at William & Mary.
