DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team will look to get back in the win column with a two-game road swing at VCU and No. 7 William & Mary this weekend. The Atlantic 10 battle against the Rams will begin at 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 25, with the tilt at William & Mary following on Sunday at 1 p.m.
About Davidson
The Wildcats enter the weekend with a 3-4 overall record and a 1-0 mark into the Atlantic 10. With its 2-1 win over La Salle, Davidson improved to 3-3 on the season, matching its win total from a season ago.
Last Time Out
Davidson split a pair of matches last weekend at Belk Turf Field. The Wildcats opened the weekend against Atlantic 10 competition. Goals from Anna Davis and Paige Albert vaulted Davidson to a, 2-1, victory over La Salle Friday for its first win at home this season. On Sunday, an early goal by Melissa Funsten wasn't enough as Longwood claimed a 2-1 overtime victory.
Spread The Wealth
Though Melissa Funsten accounts for five of the Wildcat's scores this season, Davidson has done well keeping everyone involved on the attack. In total, seven Wildcats have scored this season, and nine have at least one assist. Davidson has scored a total of 14 goals this season, one tally shy of last season's total.
Leytham's Cage
Emily Leytham has registered 445:42 minutes of action in the cage for the Wildcats this season. The senior has recorded 27 saves to boast the 33rd best save percentage (.692) in the nation and the fifth best in the A-10, while her 1.88 goals against average is good for 27th nationally and fourth in the conference.
When It All Comes Together
In Davidson's three victories this season, the Wildcats are outscoring opponents 11-2. Behind Emily Leytham in net, the defense have limited shot and penalty corner chances for the opposition, giving the offense plenty of opportunities to average its 3.67 goals per game in wins.
Scouting VCU (2-5, 1-0 Atlantic 10)
VCU is 2-5 after three weeks of the season. VCU snapped a four-game losing streak as it picked up its second win of the year at Saint Louis Sept. 20. Freshman Emily McNamara scored her team leading fifth goal of the season to blank the Bilikens, 1-0.
Offensively VCU is led by McNamara who has 13 points on five goals and three assists. Jamee Albright (three goals) and Taleah Scott (two goals, two assists) have each contributed six points. Kendall Clifton has started all seven games in the cage, recording a 2.35 GAA and a .679 save percentage.
Scouting William & Mary (4-4, 0-0 CAA)
The Tribe is coming off a 4-2 loss on Sept. 21 to No. 4 Virginia and will welcome A-10 foe Richmond to Busch Field on Friday, Sept. 25 before Sunday's battle with the Wildcats. The loss to Virginia dropped William & Mary to 4-4 on the year, but three of its four loss all came against nationally-ranked opponents, including Old Dominion, Duke and Virginia.
With eight goals, senior Pippin Saunders paces the Tribe with 19 points. Sophomore Erin Menges has a team-best six assists to go with three goals to sit second on the W&M squad with 12 points. Senior Meredith Savage has started all eight games in goal for the Tribe, making 35 saves en route to posting a .583 save percentage.
Looking Ahead
Davidson continues its four-game road swing with trips to Atlantic 10 foes Saint Francis and Lock Haven, Oct. 2-4.
