DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Melissa Funsten gave the Davidson field hockey team a 1-0 lead in the first half, but the Wildcats eventually dropped a non-conference contest, 2-1, to Longwood in overtime at Belk Turf Field Sunday afternoon. The Lancers found the back of the cage just 1:42 minutes into overtime for a sudden victory.
A back-and forth first half saw the teams trade scoring opportunity, but it would not be until the waning minutes of the opening stanza that Davidson snapped the scoreless drought. Strong pressure from Katherine English turned into a rush for the Wildcats as English fed the ball up the right flank to Lucy Pidcock. Pidcock found the stick of a charging Funsten in front of the cage, who one-timed a blast into the bottom left corner of the goal, putting Davidson up, 1-0.
Longwood responded after the intermission with an equalizer, coming from Edel Nyland, who rocketed the ball into the upper left corner from the top of the circle just 3:27 into the second half. Longwood exerted a strong offensive effort, outshooting Davidson, 7-3, and registering two penalty corners to the Wildcat's one, but the Davidson defense stood tall in the second half. Emily Leytham registered two stops.
Just 1:42 into the first overtime, the Lancers registered the game-winner through the stringent Davidson defense with Jennifer Burris pushing in a pass from Ellen Ross.
Davidson returns to action Sept. 25-27 with trips to VCU and William & Mary.
