DAVIDSON, N.C. — Fresh off their first win of the 2015 season, Davidson returns home Sunday to host its second Southern Conference opponent of the year with the Furman Paladins coming to Alumni Stadium.
The Matchup
For the second time in the past three weeks, the Wildcats (1-2) will play a second former SoCon-foe when Furman (3-2) visits Alumni Stadium for a 2 p.m. contest this Sunday, Sept. 6. In the 'Cats' opening weekend to start the season, they hosted Elon and fell in overtime, 1-0.
The All-Time Series/Last Meetings
The Wildcats and Paladins are playing for the 33rd time since first meeting in 1994. Furman holds a 21-8-3 advantage and has won the last five straight meetings, with Davidson earning a 1-1 tie in 2010. The last time both teams faced each other was in 2013, the 'Cats final year in the SoCon. Furman earned a 3-1 decision on its home field.
Scouting the Wildcats
Davidson (1-2) scored its first win of the season with a 2-1 victory on the road last Saturday at Campbell ... Sarah Tuggle and Mia Hodges each scored, with Hodges registering her first collegiate goal and the game-winner in the 68th minute ... senior Vicky Bruce picked up assists on both goals for her first two points of the season ... it was her second career two-assist game ... Tuggle's goal was her first of the season and the sixth of her career ... sophomore keeper Becca Ravitz, in her first-ever start, picked up the win between the pipes ... she had three saves ... for the third straight game, Davidson outshot its opponent and is averaging 11 shots a game ... head coach Greg Ashton won his 178th career game and 107th at Davidson with the win at Campbell ... Ashton is in his 12th year ... he is now 12 wins away from becoming the program's all-time winningest coach ... the Wildcats enter their second year in the Atlantic 10 ... the 'Cats return 16 letterwinners, including eight starters ... they welcome 11 newcomers to this year's team ... ... Davidson is led by six seniors ... Davidson was picked to finish 13th in their second year in the A-10 after going 2-5-1 in its first go-around ... of the 'Cats' 12 defeats a year ago, seven of them came by a single goal, including six that were 1-0 defeats.
Scouting the Paladins
Furman (3-2) played USC Upstate Thursday at home and earned a 1-0 decision ... Rachel Shah scored in the 65th minute off a set piece to send the Paladins to their third win of the season ... Shah has a team-high two assists and four points, second-best on the team ... Prior to Thursday's game, Furman played North Greenville and at Auburn last weekend, splitting those two games ... pacing the offense is two-time SoCon Player of the Year Stephanie DeVita with four goals ... Furman has tallied six goals and three assists on the season ... it is averaging nearly 13 shots a game ... goalkeeper Rose Hull, an All-SoCon Second Team pick last year, has played in goal all four games, with a 1.46 goals against average and 18 saves ... the Paladins are coming off a 13-4-2 record a year ago, while going 6-1-2 in SoCon action ... they return seven starters ... in the 2013 matchup vs. Davidson, Carlie Couch registered five points on two goals and an assist, while DeVita scored the other goal in the 3-1 win.
Next on the Schedule
Davidson heads to Blacksburg, Va., to face No. 10 Virginia Tech next Thursday, Sept. 10, at 7:30. It will then return home to face another ACC-foe in N.C. State on Sunday the 13th at 2 p.m. inside Alumni Stadium.
