DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team improved to 3-3 on the year, as the Wildcats knocked off Atlantic 10 foe La Salle, 2-1 Friday night at Belk Turf Field. Anna Davis and Paige Albert recorded goals for Davidson, while Emily Leytham made five stops in goal.
With three wins already this year, Davidson matches its win total from a year ago with 12 games still left in the regular season.
The intensity was high early on and continued throughout the match. Davidson used the intensity to its advantage, generating a number of early attacks before finally breaking through in the 20th minute. Davis drilled home a cross from Becca Jones to notch her third goal of the year.
Davidson maintained consistent offensive zone pressure following the goal. With less than five minutes to go, the Wildcats fired off two shots both stopped by La Salle's Rachel Hartman, keeping Davidson's lead at 1-0 heading into the intermission.
Out of the break, the Wildcats stretched its lead when sophomore Paige Albert found the back of the cage for the second time this season just 12 minutes into the half. Katherine English fired a shot towards the goal and Albert's stick was in the right place at the right time to deflect the buzzing ball right past La Salle's Hartman to put Davidson up 2-0.
La Salle looked to swing the momentum in its favor in the second half, firing eight shots and taking six penalty corners, but the stingy Davidson defense allowed just one goal to hold on for the 2-1 victory. La Salle's Jenica Miller took a penalty corner, which resulted in a shot by Megan Kida. Melissa Funsten was there to block the shot, but a Davidson foul sent Eileen Dzwill to the top of the circle for a penalty strike that she slipped past Leytham to cut the Wildcats lead to one.
The Wildcats host Longwood Sunday, Sept. 20 at 1 p.m. in an out-of-conference clash before heading to Richmond to take on VCU on Friday, Sept. 25.
