DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson field hockey team returns to the friendly confines of the Belk Turf Field this weekend, opening up the Atlantic 10 portion of its schedule with a visit from the La Salle Explorers on Friday, Sept. 18, before welcoming the Longwood Lancers on Sunday, Sept. 20.
About Davidson
The Wildcats (2-3, 0-0 Atlantic 10) come into Friday's contest searching for its third win of the year and its first in the conference. The last time Davidson saw the field was at the University of Michigan where the Wildcats rolled to an 8-1 win over Vermont, before suffering a 4-1 setback against the Wolverines. Davidson's eight goals against the Catamounts is the highest scoring game for the Wildcats since an 8-3 win over Appalachian State in 2011.
Leading the Wildcats
Seven different Wildcats have found the back of the cage with senior Melissa Funsten leading the way with four goals. Anna Davis's six points with two scores and two assist is good for second on the squad. Becca Jones and Paige Albert have recorded a goal and assists. Lucy Pidcock, Katherine English and Emily Morgan round out Davidson goal scorers with one tally each. In total, nine Wildcats have at least a point this season.
Defending the Cage
Emily Leytham has seen 297:06 minutes of action in the cage for the Wildcats this season. The senior has recorded nine saves to boast the third best save percentage (.679) in the conference, while her 1.82 goals against average is good for fourth in the Atlantic 10.
Connie Cape (41.59) and Bean Rodriguez (10:55) have also seen time in between the pipes for the Wildcats.
Scouting the Explorers
La Salle enters the contest with a 2-3 record after most recently dropping a hard fought 3-2 decision to Rider on Sept. 13. The Explorers have defeated Villanova, 2-1, and Ball State, 1-0. Gina Smith leads the squad with five points on two goals and an assist, while Devin Muracco has totaled two goals so far in 2015. Four Explorers have found the back of the net this season. Rachel Hartman has played every minute in goal for La Salle.
Scouting the Lancers
The Lancers are searching for their second win of the season, entering the weekend with a 1-3 record. Last week, Longwood won a hard fought 2-1 battle at Towson. Hollie MacDonald leads the way for Lancers with 10 points. MacDonald's five goals lead Longwood, followed by Jennifer Burris who has two tallies. Between the posts, Lauren Bernard and Katie Wyman have split time. Bernard has made 15 saves, while Wyman has turned away 10 shots.
