DAVIDSON, N.C. — Sixth-year head coach Michele Savage announced the Davidson women's basketball's non-conference schedule today, a 13-game slate with five of those games at John M. Belk Arena.
The 'Cats will start the year on the road for their first seven games, then come home for a season-long five-game homestand. It is the longest road swing to start the year since an eight-game trip to open the 2009-10 campaign.
Davidson will play the likes of Atlantic Coast Conference opponents Wake Forest and N.C. State on the road, while hosting Big Ten foe Michigan State in John M. Belk Arena. It is the third year in a row the 'Cats have hosted a top-tier opponent after welcoming Rutgers and Southern California the past two years. Also part of the non-conference schedule is a Thanksgiving tournament at UNC Wilmington.
"Every year the goal is to provide a competitive non-conference schedule with schools from several conferences that will prepare us for the challenges of the A-10 conference," said Savage. "This year continues that trend and we are also looking forward to hosting a Big Ten Conference opponent in Michigan State."
For the second year in a row, Davidson travels to Greenville, S.C., to take on former Southern Conference opponent Furman, Nov. 13, to start the year. The Paladins won 67-60 a year ago, but Davidson has won five of the past seven meetings.
A pair of ACC foes follow, with trips to Wake Forest (Nov. 17) and N.C. State (Nov. 22). The last two meetings between the Demon Deacons and the Wildcats have come down to the final minute, with WFU narrowly escaping in 68-66 and 69-66 wins.
N.C. State reached the third round of the Women's NIT to finish 18-15 last year. This will be the second season in a row the two teams have squared off against each other. The game will be played at Broughton High School in Raleigh, N.C., as the Wolfpack's home court, Reynolds Coliseum, is being renovated for the season.
Davidson continues on with its seven-game road trip by traveling to High Point for a mid-week game, Nov. 24. The 'Cats rolled to a 76-57 win against the Panthers (20-12 a year ago) last season at home, marking the fifth consecutive time in the series the teams have traded a win and a lose.
The Wildcats head to the North Carolina coast next for the UNCW Hampton Inn Thanksgiving Classic, Nov. 27-28. It will be the second time they have played in the tournament after making an appearance during the 2009-10 season. They will face Bowling Green and host UNC Wilmington.
BG, which went 9-21 last year, is coached by former Davidson women's basketball player and hall of famer Jennifer Roos. Both teams are meeting for the first time. The 'Cats will be facing the Seahawks for the ninth time as they are 3-5 in the all-time series. The last meeting took place in 2002.
Capping off the season-long seven-game road trip is a game at Radford to start the month of December. Davidson is riding a three-game win streak in the series, with the latest win (81-68) coming in 2011 on the road.
The 'Cats will welcome Western Carolina to Belk Arena for their home opener, Dec. 5, and then four days later Michigan State comes to town. The Spartans went 16-15 a year ago, and are two years removed from going 23-10 and reaching the NCAA Tournament in 2014.
The month of December also has South Carolina State (9th), East Tennessee State (18th) and cross-county rival Charlotte (20th) visiting Belk Arena before Christmas break. Davidson and the cross-county rival 49ers (15-17 a year ago) continue their rivalry, which dates back to 1974 and has Charlotte leading 15-10.
Davidson's game against ETSU will be their annual Education Day with local elementary schools. The 'Cats hold a 15-11 edge in the series vs. ETSU, but the two schools have not met since 2007.
Closing out the non-conference schedule is a trip to James Madison, Dec. 30. The two teams met last year at Belk Arena, with JMU picking up its second win in the all-time series. The Dukes had a very successful season last year going 29-4 to tie a program-best for wins and securing their second straight Colonial Athletic Association tournament title and eighth in program history.
Davidson will now wait for the release of its opponent dates for its Atlantic 10 conference schedule to complete the 2015-16 schedule.
