Davidson Drops 4-1 Decision to No. 16 Michigan

ANN ARBOR, Mich. – Senior Melissa Funsten scored Davidson's lone goal as the Wildcats fell to No. 16 Michigan Sunday afternoon at Ocker Field. Davidson trailed 1-0 late in the second half, but Michigan was able to pull away for a 4-1 victory.

Davidson (2-3) got on the board with a familiar goal-scorer finding the back of the cage as time expired in the second half. Funsten launched a blast off a penalty corner to score her team-high fourth goal of the year.

Emily Leytham recorded eight saves in the loss.

Davidson's offense was slow in the first half, as the Wolverines held possession for most of the initial frame and put 13 shots on goal. Michigan also benefited from seven corners in the first, which produced the first goal.

Katie Trombetta scored the first goal of the game, converting on a penalty corner to give Michigan a 1-0 lead 9:46 minutes in.

The first 25 minutes of the second half went by scoreless. The Wildcats took six shots and gained five corners, while slowing the Big Blue offense to nine shots and four corners in the second stanza. Michigan padded its lead with three goals in a 1:25 span.

Shannon Scavelli made it 2-0 at the 64:09 minute mark, when the senior received the ball from Veerle Lubbers and rocketed the ball into the opposite corner of the cage. 24 seconds later, Scavelli struck again. The forward carried the ball into the circle and fired the ball past Leytham high to the opposite corner. Lauren Thomas's goal at the 65:34 minute mark secured the victory for Michigan, 4-1. Jaime Dean was credited with the assists.

Davidson returns to Belk Turf Field Friday, Sept. 19 with its first Atlantic 10 game of the year. The Wildcats will face La Salle at 5:30 p.m.
