Davidson Suffers 3-1 Setback at Lehigh

BETHLEHEM, Pa. – The Davidson field hockey team dropped a 3-1 decision at Lehigh, Sunday afternoon to wrap up its opening weekend. The Wildcats ended its two-game road swing with a 1-1 record.
Lehigh and Davidson each tallied 10 shots, while the host held a 7-3 advantage in penalty corners. Senior goalkeeper Emily Leytham finished the day with six saves.
Davidson scored its only goal at the 65:18 mark when the Wildcats were awarded a penalty corner. Anna Brewer passed the ball to Becca Jones at the top of the circle. Jones slid the ball over to Melissa Funsten who fired the ball straight into the back of the cage and past Julia Ward to make it 3-1.
The Mountain Hawks opened the scoring just 7:06 into the first half when Davidson gave up a corner. Lehigh's Amanda Granger inserted the ball to Julia Washburn. Washburn fired a shot from the top of the circle into the back of the cage.
Lehigh extended its lead less than seven minutes later when Lindsey Schott carried the ball into the offensive third, and found the stick of Taylor Mygatt. Mygatt carried the ball and beat Leytham low to make it, 2-0, heading into the half.
After some back and fourth play to start the second half, Schott gave Lehigh a 3-0 lead at the 44:06 mark off a penalty stroke.
The Wildcats return to action Thursday, Sept. 3 for its home opener against Missouri State at 5:30 p.m.
