Davidson Falls in Straight Sets at Charlotte

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Davidson volleyball team suffered a 3-0 loss in their opening game of the 2015 season at Charlotte Friday evening. The defeat came by set scores of 25-17, 25-13, 26-24.
Sarah Fink and Mason Rooney paced the offense with eight and six kills, respectively for the Wildcats (0-1). Mikayla Derochie dished out 14 assists and added three digs, while Morgan Shannon added 10 digs. Ciera Cockrell notched four block assists and Mary Harriet Moore chipped in three.
Charlotte (1-0) was led by Sarah McDonald and Kaylyn Torain. McDonald totaled 12 kills, while Torain added nine kills. Britney Leigh Held notched 35 assists and nine digs as Shelby Green added 15 digs.
Charlotte sprinted out to a 13-6 lead to begin the match and pulled away with a 6-1 stretch late for the 25-17 first-set win.
Charlotte carried its momentum into the second-set taking a 9-4 lead off a McDonald kill. A string of Charlotte errors brought the Wildcats within two, before a 49ers' 8-2 run pushed the score to 18-10. Back-to-back kills from Torain and Sarah Adams led the host past Davidson, 25-13.
Davidson didn't give up without a fight in the third set, which featured 16 ties and seven lead changes.
With the Wildcats trailing 20-18 late in the set, Fink registered two kills and Rooney added one to even the score 22-22, but it wasn't enough as Charlotte put the frame away, 26-24.
The Wildcats return to the court tomorrow for the second day as they take on Asheville (10 a.m.) and USC Upstate (5 p.m.).
