DAVIDSON, N.C. —A soon to be freshman guard for the Davidson women's basketball team, Justine Lyon capped off her outstanding prep career by participating in the prestigious North Carolina girl's East-West All-Star game, July 20, at the Greensboro Coliseum in Greensboro, N.C.
Lyon had a nice all-around game in leading the East to a dominating 84-72 victory over the West squad. The East totaled 16 steals and 67 rebounds, while holding the West to a 31-percent night shooting from the field. The 84 points were the most scored by an East girls squad since 2004 (85) and the fifth-highest scoring total for the East in the 41-year history of the game.
Helping reach the fifth-highest scoring total was Lyon, who earned a spot in the starting lineup and finished 4-of-12 from the field for eight points. She also pulled in five rebounds, pocketed a pair of steals and swatted away one of the East's eight shots on the evening.
The Durham, N.C. native, starred at Hillside during her prep career. Lyon finished her prep career averaging 17 points a game and eight rebounds as a senior, while scoring 1,452 total points to go with over 1,000 rebounds. The 5-9 guard led Hillside to a 21-4 record in 2014-15 and earned a spot into the third round of the NCHSAA Playoffs. She earned all-conference honors her final three prep years.
The East-West All-Star Games were founded in 1949 by Coach Bob Jamieson of Grimsley High School and Smith Barrier, the Sports Editor of the Greensboro Daily News, to help finance the North Carolina Coaches Association coaching clinic. The games feature players who have just graduated from high school – the best from the Eastern half of North Carolina against the best from the West.
Women's basketball was added to the All-Star Games in the summer of 1975, and soccer for both men and women premiered in 1992 at the UNCG Soccer Stadium, where they are still held.
Lyon will be joining fellow freshmen Kianna Speight, Kyla Roland and Mya Webb this coming fall as they will team up with nine returning letterwinners from a year ago.
