NORTHBROOK, Ill. – Allstate Insurance Company and the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) announced Wednesday a record-breaking 194 nominees for the Allstate AFCA Good Works Team®, including Davidson senior defensive lineman Chris Woods.
Since its inception in 1992, the award highlights the "good" taking place off the football field. The select group of student-athletes nominated for this award by their respective colleges and universities are able to balance academics and athletics while remaining committed to helping others and bettering their communities.
Woods is seeking to become the second-straight Wildcat to earn a spot on the team as Dan Casey was honored in 2014.
An honorable mention All-PFL defensive lineman last season, Woods has been a leader on and off the field. For football, he was elected team captain for this upcoming season as well as being a three-time honor committee representative for the squad. Woods was also honored as the team's representative on the Student Advisory Athletic Council.
Off the field, Woods has been heavily involved in programs that help underprivileged school systems in the Charlotte Mecklenburg area, including the Children's Defense Freedom Schools Program (CDF).
During his involvement with CDF, Woods helped provide reading enrichment for elementary students who might otherwise not have access to books. The program boosts student motivation to read, generates more positive attitudes toward learning and increases self-esteem.
In addition to CDF Freedom Schools Program, Woods has volunteered with the Alamance-Burlington School System where he has provided academic enrichment for middle school students as well as holding a college seminar series that focus on college preparation.
Outside of school systems, Woods has volunteered with the Special Olympics in Elon, N.C., Brookwood Village Retirement Community, Salvation Army Boys and Girls Club, Allied Homeless Shelter and the American Red Cross Blood Drive.
In order to meet the criteria set forth by Allstate and the AFCA, each player must be actively involved and committed to working with a charitable organization or service group while maintaining a strong academic standing.
The following players have been nominated for consideration to the 2015 Allstate AFCA Good Works Team for the "combined divisions." The 11-player team will be announced in September 2015.
