DAVIDSON, N.C. – Bob Patnesky, the Davidson wrestling head coach, has been selected for induction into the Washington-Green County Pennsylvania Hall of Fame. The ceremony will be held Friday, June 12.
Patnesky was a successful and decorated wrestler, who had an outstanding career on the mat. A three-time NCAA qualifier, Patnesky remains the all-time winningest wrestler in his weight class at West Virginia. He was named the 2000 Eastern Wrestling League champion, helping his team win the EWL crown and a sixth-place finish in the country. He was a three-time Jr. National All-American, a national finalist, individually ranked among the top 12 wrestlers in the country for three years and finished his college career with more than 100 victories. He also competed for the U.S. on a tour of France and Poland in 1999 and earned NWCA Academic All-American accolades.
At the helm of Davidson wrestling for 10 years, Patnesky recently became the second most winningest coach in program history after a 22-18 win over Coker.
Patnesky has guided the Wildcats to an unprecedented run of success, highlighted by back-to-back NCAA Championship appearances and four Southern Conference Champions.
In 2010, Patnesky returned Davidson to the NCAA Wrestling Championships for the first time since 1999 after guiding Alex Radsky to the top of the podium at the SoCon Championship at 133 pounds. Radsky was the first Wildcat to claim the top spot on the conference podium in 41 years.
The 2012-13 season ended on a high note, as then-sophomore Anthony Elias pulled off a number of upsets at the championship to claim the 2013 SoCon title at 133 pounds, earning a bid to the NCAA National Championships.
Davidson boasted its second straight SoCon champion, as Scott Patrick won the 2014 SoCon title at 184 pounds. Teammate Kevin Birmingham earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship at 149 pounds. It marked the first time in program history the Wildcats qualified a pair of wrestlers for the NCAA Championship.
2014-15 proved to be a historic season for Davidson wrestling. It had been nearly 50 years since a Wildcat wrestler recorded a victory at the National Tournament. Patrick did it twice in consecutive days to become the first in the program's 95 years to win multiple matches at the NCAA Championship.
The Washington-Green County Pennsylvania Hall of Fame is a nonprofit organization founded to perpetuate the memory of athletes, who have brought lasting fame and recognition the State of Pennsylvania through their athletic achievements. Patnesky, along with 13 honorees will make up the induction class of 2015.
