Complete 2015 Schedule
DAVIDSON, N.C. – The Davidson women's volleyball team will play 11 matches at Belk Arena in the fall as part of the team's 2015 schedule released by head coach Chris Willis.
Davidson, which is coming off its inaugural season in the Atlantic 10, will play a total of 26 matches, including a 12-match conference slate.
"We are excited about the 2015 schedule as it will challenge us and better prepare us for the rigors of the A-10," said Willis. "We were fortunate to find several quality tournaments within our region, which allows us to keep our travel days, and missed class time to a minimum."
The Wildcats' campaign begins with a short trip down the road for the Charlotte Invitational (Aug. 28-29), as Davidson will face the 49ers, Asheville and USC Upstate.
"Playing the opening weekend tournament at Charlotte helps rekindle the local rivalry and will give us two other matches to get our feet wet," said Willis. "I hope to utilize several different lineups and see everyone get some playing time."
Davidson will open its home slate the following week with the Wildcat Classic (Sept. 4-5) as Hampton, Presbyterian and East Carolina invade Davidson for the two-day event. The Wildcats boasts a 29-27 record over the 17-year history of the tournament.
"The Wildcat Classic will bring in the local talents of East Carolina and Presbyterian, along with NCAA Tournament participant, Hampton University. I think this should be a very competitive field, and our goal is to secure a home tournament championship again," added Willis.
After a mid-week trip to Elon Sept. 8, Davidson will head out on the road, traveling to High Point for the High Point Invitational (Sept. 11-12). The Wildcats are set to face the Panthers, Wake Forest and Marshall.
"The High Point Invitational will be very challenging with ACC foe Wake Forest and Conference USA opponent Marshall joining the event," commented Willis. "These are three high level teams that will bring physicality to the gym. I'm looking for improvements throughout the weekend as we compete at High Point."
The Winthrop Invitational will serve as Davidson's final non-conference tune-up as the Wildcats will first play Murray State (Sept. 18) before taking on West Virginia and Winthrop (Sept. 19).
"Our final non-conference tournament, at Winthrop, will include Big 10 powerhouse West Virginia and 2014 Ohio Valley Conference Champion Murray State," said Willis. "This will probably be our toughest weekend of the preseason, and I hope it gives our team the confidence and experience to perform well in the A-10."
A-10 play opens with a two-game road swing at the end of September. The Wildcats will play at Fordham (Sept. 25) before taking on Rhode Island (Sept. 27).
"The A-10 schedule will challenge us physically and mentally," said Willis. "Last year we got a feel of the talent level of the conference and feel better about what we are facing on the court."
Davidson returns home Oct. 2 against George Mason to open a three-match homestand. A-10 play will get into full swing as Davidson hosts the Patriots and George Washington Oct. 2-4, with one more home date against VCU Oct. 10 to cap off the stretch. The Wildcats will head to Greensboro, N.C., to take on non-conference foe North Carolina A&T (Oct. 13).
The A-10 slate continues with a trip to Dayton (Oct. 16) and Saint Louis (Oct. 18) before returning to the friendly confines of Belk to host Duquesne (Oct. 23) and La Salle (Oct. 25). A three-match road trip awaits the Wildcats to close out October and open November as Davidson will travel to VCU (Oct. 31), La Salle (Nov. 6) and Duquesne (Nov. 8) in consecutive weeks.
Davidson's regular season will come to a close with Rhode Island (Nov.13) and Fordham (Nov. 15) each making a trip to the south.
"The 2015 schedule really forces us to travel more than we've done in the past, so it will be a challenge to manage our time effectively and remain competitive" added Willis. "Overall, I'm looking forward to establishing ourselves as contenders in the A-10 and moving Davidson into new territory as a program."
Davidson will return 13 letterswinners, including 2014 co-captains Hannah Rau and Gaylen Fronk, while welcoming five newcomers to the court this season.
