DAVIDSON, N.C. — Former women's basketball player Lillian McCabe recently earned the opportunity to continue her basketball career as well as her education through the Victory Scholarship Program in partnership with Sport Changes Life and the Atlantic 10.
The Victory Scholarship Program is designed to inspire young people to excel through a unique Irish international post-graduate scholarship program. Sport Changes Life will sponsor scholarships for A-10 student-athletes to attend graduate programs in leading universities in Ireland, while acting as mentors with local, at-risk youth.
"I'm so honored to have been chosen as a Victory Scholar by the Sport Changes Life Foundation," said McCabe. "I am so excited for all that the following year has in store for me! Not only do I get to live in Ireland, a country I have always wanted to live in for a time, but I also get to extend my studies and play basketball for another year. But most importantly, I'm really looking forward to coaching young players and having a positive impact in their lives!"
McCabe will continue to play basketball as part of the program, and will coach and mentor young people in neighboring local communities and gaining valuable work-life experience through internships, partnerships and friendships, cultural exchange and enrichment. This is in addition to the opportunity to pursue graduate programs at top universities in Ireland.
The Rye, N.Y., native, who leaves for Ireland August 24, will be at IT Carlow University, in the small town of Carlow, about an hour outside Dublin. McCabe will be enrolled in a one-year MSc in Business course, and playing for the school's women's basketball team, which competes in the Ladies National League Division I and the Midlands League Division I. She also will be coaching young players in Carlow working camps and traveling with the other Victory Scholars.
A four-year letterwinner at Davidson, McCabe graduated this past May with degrees in both religion and history as she finished with a 3.64 grade point average. In Davidson's first year in the A-10 this season, she was named to the A-10 Commissioner's Honor Roll for both the fall and spring semesters. McCabe was also a two-time SoCon All-Academic Team member during the Wildcats' final two years in the Southern Conference.
McCabe finished her Wildcat career playing in 102 games, while starting 40 of those contests. One of Davidson's first players off the bench in her final season during the 2014-15 campaign, she averaged close to five points a game. McCabe was one of the 'Cats' main threats from behind the arc, finishing with 61 three-pointers for her career. The shooting guard hit a personal-best 30 treys during her senior year and paced the team by hitting 35.7 percent of her three-balls.
"This is an outstanding opportunity that is a win-win for everyone involved. Our student-athletes have the opportunity to earn advanced degrees abroad, while continuing to play and coach in their sport. The youth involved in the Sport Changes Life programs will be partnered with the student-athletes as mentors in sports, school and life," stated A-10 Commissioner Bernadette V. McGlade. "The Atlantic 10 also receives the opportunity to extend globally through an initiative that is in step with our focus on academics, athletics and extraordinary opportunities."
