NEWPORT NEWS, Va. — The freshmen duo of Shamael Chaudhry and Artem Khrapko topped off their outstanding first years by being named to the Atlantic 10 All-First Team with the release today of the league's men's tennis all-conference teams and academic team.
The pair helped the Wildcats to a 12-10 record and a 4-1 mark in their first year in the A-10. They combined for 25 singles wins at the No. 1 and 2 positions, respectively, while adding another 14 wins combined in doubles.
A native of Walsall, United Kingdom, Chaudhry represented Davidson at the top singles slot for the season. After falling in his first collegiate match to No. 24 Clemson, the freshman ran off a stretch of winning 11 of his next 12 matches, including an impressive 10-match win streak. Chaudhry tallied four of those wins in three sets as he finished 4-1 on the year in three-set matches.
The freshman was one of five players on the team to reach the 10-win mark in singles, going 12-9 overall and 3-2 in A-10 action. Chaudhry added another five wins in doubles with partner Ricky Saad as they went 5-3 at the No. 3 spot.
Khrapko was just as impressive as his fellow classmate during his debut season. The Corning, N.Y., native broke onto the scene by going a team-best 15-7 in singles and 4-1 in league play. He recorded 13 of those wins at No. 2, while picking single wins at No. 1 and No. 3 positions, respectively, during the season.
Assisting Khrapko to his team-leading 15 wins was a team-high 12-match win streak that spanned over a month long. He collected five three-set wins during the stretch and finished a perfect 6-0 in his three-set matches on the season. Khrapko closed out the year winning three of his last four matches, including a 6-4, 3-6, 6-1 win vs. George Mason in the A-10 Tournament.
Khrapko played all three positions in doubles, teaming with David Hager for a team-best record of 9-6. They scored eight of those wins combined at No. 2 and 3 positions, while opening the year winning seven of their first 10 matches.
The duo were honored throughout the season by the A-10, claiming A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week three times and Performer of the Week once. Chaudhry grabbed the first two weekly awards, Feb. 11 & 17, and Khrapko followed with two of his own, Feb. 24 & March 17.
For the third time in four years, George Washington's Francisco Dias was named the A-10 Most Outstanding Performer of the Year, as voted on by the league's head coaches, after helping lead the Colonials to their third championship title in the past four years this season. Catalin Fifea of VCU was named Most Outstanding Rookie of the Year, while Richmond's Ben Johnson earned Coach of the Year accolades.
