NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Sophomore Elise Lankiewicz, senior Meredith Nakano and junior Luke Burton of the Davidson swimming & diving program have earned Atlantic 10 Academic All-Conference honors, announced by the league office Wednesday afternoon.
Athletes are eligible for the All-Academic Team if they earn a cumulative grade-point average of at least a 3.00 on a 4.00 scale, and must be a starter or important reserve.
The 2015 A-10 Most Outstanding Performer, Lankiewicz, finished her sophomore season with three individual titles in the 500-yard freestyle, 200-yard freestyle and the 100-yard freestyle and first-place finishes in the 800 freestyle relay, 200 freestyle relay and the 400 freestyle relay. This is Lankiewicz's third academic honor in her young collegiate career. Lankiewicz is studying biology.
Nakano placed in the top-five in all seven events in which she competed. The Alpharetta, Ga., native medaled in four events, including first-place finishes in the 400 freestyle relay that set A-10 Championship record and the 800 freestyle relay that broke the championship, and pool records. This is Nakano's fourth conference academic honor, as she was placed on the CCSA All-Academic team for three-straight seasons. Nakano is studying psychology.
Burton highlighted the Atlantic 10 Championships with a first-place finish in the 200 backstroke that set an A-10 Championship record. The Kennesaw, Ga., native also placed second in the 100 backstroke to set a new program mark. His lead-off split in the 400 freestyle relay also was a new Davidson record. The junior is a psychology major.
In their first year in the Atlantic 10 Conference, the Wildcats finished with the men placing sixth, while the women secured a fourth-place showing at the 2015 Atlantic 10 Swimming & Diving Championships in February.
