Davidson Splits a Pair of Weekend Road Matches

RICHMOND, Va. / DURHAM, N.C.  — The Davidson men's tennis team played a pair of road matches over the weekend, falling in an Atlantic 10 match to Richmond (L, 1-6) Saturday before regrouping with a win at N.C. Central (W, 5-2) Sunday afternoon.
 
With Davidson's 1-1 weekend, it moves to 12-6 on the season. The setback to Richmond (10-6, 2-0 A-10) was the 'Cats first in league play, falling to 4-1 on the year. The 'Cats and Eagles (6-8) were playing each other for the first time.
 
Down 1-0 on Sunday to NCCU after dropping the doubles point, the Wildcats roared back with victories at five of the six singles spots to earn the win.
 
Shamael Chaudhry and J.B. Gough and won their 12th and 13th matches, respectively, at No. 1 and 3 positions. Freshman Chaudhry picked up a 6-3, 6-1 win, while Gough ran his record to 12-4 at the third spot with a 6-4, 6-2 decision. He is a team-best 13-5 overall.
 
David Hager pushed his win streak to three in a row with a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 vs. the Eagles. It was the first-year's ninth win in his last 10 matches overall.
 
Giving the 'Cats their final two points was Ricky Saad and Alex Howard at No. 4 and 6. Saad ran his singles record to 8-5 on the season with an impressive 6-0, 6-1 win. Howard sealed up his second win of the year by winning a 10-8 super tie-breaker decision at No. 6. He had split his first two sets by the scores of 4-6 and 6-4.
 
In Saturday's defeat to the Spiders, Hager was the lone Wildcat to earn a team point in singles. The freshman won his eighth match of the season by scoring a 7-6, 6-2 decision at No. 5.
 
The doubles team of Artem Khrapko and Hager ran their record to a team-best 8-4 after netting an 8-3 win at No. 3, but Richmond won matches of 8-3 and 8-4 at the other two spots to grab the first team point.
 
Davidson returns home for its final home match of the season, hosting Elon next Thursday, April 2, at 3:30 p.m.
