SPARTANBURG, S.C. — In a matchup of former Southern Conference opponents, the Wofford Terriers ended Davidson's season-best 10-match win streak as the Wildcats fell 6-1 on the road Wednesday afternoon at the Reeves Tennis Center in non-conference men's tennis action.
The Wildcats fell for the first time since Feb. 7 to see their record go to 11-4. Their 10-match win streak was the longest since a 12-match streak in 1997. Wofford, which defeat the 'Cats last year by the same score, moved to 7-6.
The lone team point came from No. 2 singles player J.B. Gough, who captured a 6-3, 7-6 decision. The sophomore ran his record to 12-3 on the year to tie Artem Khrapko for best on the team.
Not only did Davidson's team win streak come to an end, but the trio of Khrapko, David Hager and Ricky Saad all saw their own personal singles win streaks halted as well. Fresh off being named the A-10 Performer of the Week, Khrapko did not go down without a fight as he win 11 combined games in his two sets, but fell in the end 7-5, 7-6. The freshman had won 12 straight matches dating back to Feb. 7.
Hager, who was named this week's A-10 Rookie Performer of the Week, fell by the scores of 6-3, 6-4 at No. 5. It snapped his six-match win streak and was also his first defeat at that position.
At No. 4, Saad took the first set, 6-4, but fell 6-3 in the second one. With the team match already decided, he played a super tie-breaker and fell 10-5, ending his three-match win streak.
Davidson fell at No. 2 and 3 doubles, 6-1, 6-0, to start the match.
The Wildcats will take a week off before taking on another former SoCon foe, this time at home, in UNCG next Wednesday, March 25, at 3 p.m.
