Comeback at ODU Falls Short for ‘Cats, 10-8

NORFOLK, Va. — Davidson's comeback bid at Old Dominion fell just short as it nearly erased a six-goal deficit in the second half before falling Sunday afternoon to the Monarchs, 10-8, at the LR Hill Complex in women's lacrosse.
Davidson dropped to 1-2 overall in the season, while ODU improved to 4-1.
Down 8-2 after the Monarchs scored 30 seconds into the start of the second half, the Wildcats went on a 5-0 run to get within one with 16:24 remaining. Their momentum ended there as the 'Cats were held to just one goal the rest of the way.
Annie Brockett paced the offense with four points on two goals and two assists, both team highs. It pushed her totals on the season to team highs of 10 goals and 12 points.
Emily Rademacher netted a goal and added two assists, while Emily Cooke registered two points on a goal and an assist. Four other Wildcats scored once each to round out the scoring.
Old Dominion had a pair of double-digit goal scorers led by Ashmore Standing's four goals to go with two assists. Cydney Tutchton added a pair of goals and four other Monarchs scored a goal apiece.
Standing (3 goals, 2 assists) and Tutchton (a goal) combined for six points in the first half as ODU went into the break up 8-2.
Brockett scored Davidson's first goal to cut the deficit in half, 2-1, in the early stages of the first half and then assisted on Cooke's goal later to bring Davidson within two at 4-2 and 14:15 on the clock.
In the second half, Rademacher sparked the 'Cats 5-0 run with her fourth goal of the season off Cooke's seventh assist of the year. Arden Simone, Morgan Burch, Brockett and Emma Sissman all added a goal during the spurt to get Davidson within 8-7.
Lucy Sexton netted her ninth goal of the year on Rademacher's assist to make it 9-8, but a turnover with under eight minutes to go allowed ODU to score the final goal with 6:13 on the clock.
Davidson won the ensuing draw control, but another turnover by the 'Cats caused the Monarchs to ran some time off. The Wildcats were only able to get one shot off in the final six minutes.
ODU held a 27-20 edge in shots, while the Wildcats earned an advantage in grounballs, 21-18, and draw controls at 15-6. They were also 3-for-8 in free-position shots and 11-of-18 on clear attempts.
Rademacher registered a season-high five draw controls, while Holly Thomas hauled in three to go with a career-high three caused turnovers and a couple groundballs. Goalie Katy Boyle scooped up a career-best seven groundballs and finished with a career-high tying 11 saves.
Davidson returns home for a 1 p.m. contest against Saint Francis (Pa.), March 7.
