WASHINGTON, D.C. — No. 23/24 George Washington put three players in double figures, including Jonquel Jones' double-double, and Davidson was unable to stop one of the hottest teams in the nation as it fell 52-35 on the road Thursday morning in an Atlantic 10 matchup in Charles E. Smith Center.
With over 2,000 local elementary kids in the stands as part of the Colonials' Education Field Day, GW (20-2, 9-0 A-10) pushed its win streak to 18 straight games, fifth-longest in the nation, and remained perfect in league play.
Jones, who came in averaging a double-double, finished with 12 points and 13 rebounds, while Shannon Cranshaw scored 12 on 4-of-6 shooting from downtown. Hannah Schaible rounded out the trio of double-figure scorers for the Colonials with 11 points.
Davidson (5-18, 1-9 A-10) did its best to hang tough against its nationally ranked opponent, holding GW to 33.3 percent shooting and 22 points below their season scoring average, while keeping within striking distance in the first half. But, a 15-0 run that spanned the end of the first half and ran into the start of the new half by the Colonials proved to be too much.
Leading 25-23, GW closed the first half on a 6-0 spurt and then opened the new half by scoring the first nine points to push its lead out to 40-23. It would lead by as many as 21 points the rest of the way.
Alexandra Long led the 'Cats with a career-high tying 11 points to go with four rebounds. Freshman Mackenzie Latt added six points and nine rebounds, while senior Mellissa Giegerich added six off the bench.
Davidson's leading scorer, Hannah Early who came in averaging nearly 15 points a game, had a tough shooting day, going just 2-of-14 from the floor and 1-for-8 from behind the arc for five points. She was able to pull in nine rebounds.
In the first half, Davidson forced seven turnovers and held George Washington to 36 percent shooting. Giegerich gave the Wildcats a brief 10-9 lead early on back-to-back layups. A few minutes later, five straight points by Long, including a shot from downtown, kept the 'Cats close at 17-15 with 7:21 on the clock.
After GW pulled ahead 25-17 on a Jones' bucket inside, Early and Lillian McCabe each drained a three-pointer to make it 25-23, forcing the Colonials to burn their second time out of the half. GW regrouped out of the timeout and would score the final six points of the half to take a 31-23 lead into the locker room for halftime.
The Wildcats hit the 40-rebound mark for the 10th time this year and second straight game.
Next up for Davidson is a trip to Fairfax, Va., where it will play at George Mason Sunday, Feb. 8, at 2 p.m.
GAME NOTES: Early is now 29 points away from 1,000 for her career … Early's 58 three-pointers on the season are eight away from tying Ashley Lax's single-season record of 66 set in 2008-09 … Both teams were playing each other for the first time … George Washington won its ninth straight home game.
