DAVIDSON, N.C. — Freshman Artem Khrapko became the latest Wildcat to earn an Atlantic 10 weekly men's tennis award, as he was honored with rookie performer of the week, as announced by the league office today.
Khrapko joins Shamael Chaudhry as the two Davidson players who have earned rookie of the week honors, while J.B. Gough was the league's performer of the week, Feb. 11. Twice Chaudhry has picked up rookie honors.
Helping lead Davidson to a 3-0 weekend, Khrapko went a combined 5-1 in singles and doubles in matches at home against Limestone, USC-Upstate and North Carolina A&T. The freshman from Corning, N.Y., picked up two wins in straight sets Saturday (6-1, 6-0), (6-3, 6-4) at the No. 2 spot, before moving to the top spot on Sunday. Khrapko continued the winning with a 6-3, 6-2 decision to push his singles win streak to eight straight, tying Chaudhry for best on the team. His overall record ran to 8-2, with seven of those wins coming at the No. 2.
In addition to his solid singles play, Khrapko also teamed up with David Hager at No. 2 doubles, blanking Limestone, 6-0, then scoring a 6-1 victory against N.C. A&T on Sunday. The pair of doubles wins pushed their record to a team-best 5-2 on the season.
Davidson (7-3), riding a six-match win streak, takes a little time off before heading to Charleston, S.C., to face former Southern Conference opponent The Citadel, March 5 at 2 p.m.
