Dalby Returns to Davidson Men’s Soccer Staff

DAVIDSON, N.C. – Greg Dalby, a former Wildcat assistant and two-time All-America midfielder at Notre Dame, is returning to the Davidson men's soccer staff, as announced by head coach Matt Spear Tuesday afternoon.
"I am excited for Greg to re-join us and Davidson is fortunate he feels so strongly about our mission and profile," said Spear. "What a stellar resume - Greg has been a player, coach, and leader at the absolute pinnacle. He is a winner and a person of impact due to his talent, drive, and capacity to lift others. Greg and I share an emphasis on the student-athlete model, people development, and elevating to high standards."
For the last three seasons, Dalby has served as an assistant coach at his alma mater, where he helped guide the Fighting Irish to a 46-10-11 record, the 2013 national championship and two conference titles.
Prior to returning to South Bend, Dalby spent two seasons (2010-11) on Spear's staff that produced a combined four all-conference performers and 12 all-academic selections. In addition, the Wildcats knocked off then-No. 2 North Carolina on Oct. 17, 2011 at Alumni Stadium.
"I am really excited to return back to Davidson," Dalby said. "Davidson College is a special place and I can't wait to begin working with the players and to be a part of Coach Spear's staff. This is a great opportunity for me and I am honored to re-join Davidson and its goals of being an institution with strong soccer and academics."
During his playing days at Notre Dame, Dalby was a two-time team captain and started all 88 matches in which he played ranks second all-time at Notre Dame.
He earned first team All-America honors from the NSCAA during his junior and senior seasons. Dalby was named the 2006 BIG EAST Midfielder of the Year and collected all-BIG EAST honors three times, in addition to being a two-time M.A.C. Hermann Trophy semifinalist.
Dalby and the Fighting Irish captured the 2003 BIG EAST Championship title and the 2004 BIG EAST regular-season crown. Notre Dame qualified for the NCAA Championship all four of his seasons.
In 2006, Dalby received the Byron V. Kanaley Award, which is the most prestigious honor awarded to a Notre Dame student-athlete. It has been presented annually since 1927 to senior monogram athletes who have been exemplary as both students and leaders.
Dalby, a three-time BIG EAST Academic All-Star, graduated from Notre Dame's College of Arts and Letters in 3.5 years with a BA in Theology and Film Production
In addition to an impressive playing career with the Fighting Irish, Dalby was named the 2002 Parade and Gatorade National High School Player of the Year, Captain of the U.S. Under 20 National Team and played six years of the professional soccer, including time with Belgium's Royal Club Sporting Charleroi, (2007-08) and the Colorado Rapids (Major League Soccer) (2008-09) and the Charlotte Eagles (USL).
Dalby also has experience coaching at the club level. He was the head coach of the Charlotte United FC Elite-Level U14 boys squad and was the Colorado Rapids Youth Academy coach from July 2008 to March 2010.
Dalby is married to the former Stacey Backstrom and they are proud parents of baby daughter Addilyn.
