NEWPORT NEWS. Va. — The duo of sophomore J.B. Gough and freshman Shamael Chaudhry became the first Davidson men's tennis players to earn Atlantic 10 weekly honors as Gough was tabbed the league's performer of the week and Chaudhry earned the rookie of the week for matches played from Feb. 3-10, as announced today by the league office.
Both players helped the Wildcats earn their first win of the season last Saturday, taking a 5-2 win against Wingate, which came in ranked No. 30 in the ITA Division II poll. The 'Cats also faced Gardner-Webb and Presbyterian in last week's matches.
Gough finished 4-2 in matches against the three opponents. At No. 3 singles, Gough picked up a three-set victory against the Runnin' Bulldogs before earning a straight-set win against Wingate. Pairing with Jordan Hart in No. 1 and 2 doubles, Gough helped the 'Cats earn the doubles point vs. Gardner-Webb with a 7-5 victory, then earned a 6-3 win against Wingate's top pair.
Chaudhry had a perfect week, going a combined 5-0 in singles and doubles, and earned his first career wins in both positions as well. The Walsall, UK, product started his week off by scoring one of Davidson's three team points against the Runnin' Bulldogs, capturing a 3-6, 6-2, 6-1 win at No. 1 singles for his first collegiate victory. In a doubleheader last Saturday, he teamed up with Ricky Saad at No. 3 doubles for a pair of wins vs. Wingate (6-3) and Presbyterian (6-1).
In singles, the Wildcats' No. 1 player earned his second and third singles wins, taking a 6-0, 6-4 decision against the Bulldogs and then capping off the doubleheader with his second three-set victory of the season vs. the Blue Hose, 6-7, 6-4, 6-4.
Davidson hits the road for the first time this year, playing three straight matches over the weekend. It starts at Sacred Heart, Feb. 13, at 3 p.m., then the Wildcats play their first A-10 match with a trip to Fordham the next day. They close out the weekend with a 12 p.m. match against Saint Francis (N.Y.) on Sunday.
