CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Competing against a very competitive field, including top ACC teams North Carolina, Virginia and Duke, the Davidson women's tennis team wrapped up their Fall season by taking part in the annual Kitty Harrison Invitational on the campus of North Carolina over the weekend, Nov. 6-8.
The 12th-annual invitational was played at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center in Chapel Hill, and at Duke University in Durham. Named in honor of former UNC head coach Kitty Harrison, the event featured 19 teams from throughout the country.
Eight Wildcats competed over the weekend in singles and doubles. Five of the players scored at least one win in singles, led by Anna Catharine Feaster's two victories. The sophomore opened with a 1-6, 6-1, 1-0(4) win over Elon and then earned her second win on Saturday with a 6-2, 4-6, 1-0(7) over William & Mary. Her weekend was halted after going to her third tie-breaker to determine the match, falling 3-6, 7-6(4), 1-0(8) to Atlantic 10-foe VCU.
Ava Todd earned a tie-breaker win over William & Mary, 6-3, 1-6, 1-0(8), while Cassidy Shell defeated her VCU opponent with a tie-breaker win of her own, 6-4, 6-7(4), 1-0(5).
The freshmen tandem of Gabrielle Centenari and Megan Scholvinck each tallied a win. Centenari, who played four singles matches, picked up her win against VCU in straight sets, 6-3, 6-3. Scholvinck went 1-1 on the weekend, getting her victory against Elon after a 7-6(3), 5-7, 1-0(7) triumph.
Three of Davidson four doubles teams scored a win over the weekend. The pair of Todd and Scholvinck picked up an 8-3 decision against Ball State, while Ally Sexton and Feaster netted an 8-4 decision against Georgia Southern.
The duo of Centenari and Shell defeated Penn State with a close 8-7 victory for their only win together.
Also competing over the weekend was Elaina Cummer and Sarah Stein.
The Wildcats take some time off before hitting the courts again for their Spring season in late January.
