NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Freshman Sabrina Shepherd was named Atlantic 10 Co-Rookie of the Year, while Morgan Shannon earned a spot on the conference all-academic team, the conference announced Thursday.
Shepherd, who was also named to the conference's all-rookie team, is just the second student-athlete in Davidson volleyball history to earn the honor, and the first since Michele Augustin was named Southern Conference Freshman of the Year in 1992.
A 6-0 middle hitter, Shepherd averaged 2.19 kills per set to go along with a .354 hitting percentage, 1.06 blocks per set and 0.22 digs per set. The Cave Spring, Ark., native ranked fourth among conference leaders in hitting percentage and fifth in the A-10 in blocks per set
The rookie turned in 15 kills and 10 blocks to register her first career-double double in a 3-2 victory over Marshall. Shepherd registered a career-high 18 kills and .680 hitting percentage against Duquesne. Shepherd was named the Atlantic 10's Rookie of the Week three times this year.
Shepherd shares the honor with George Washington's Kelsey Clark.
"This is a great honor for someone who truly deserves it," said head coach Chris Willis. "Sabrina worked hard throughout the year, battling injuries and never making excuses. She also never sought the limelight, always putting the team first. This award was made possible through her focused efforts and the team's ability to execute. If we don't have passers and setters getting her the ball, she wouldn't have accomplished so much. I'm proud of Sabrina and the entire team for earning this award amongst so much great freshmen talent throughout the A-10."
Shannon earned her second All-Atlantic 10 Academic honor. Shannon, the starting libero for the Wildcats, led Davidson with 3.86 digs per set. Her 3.86 digs per set ranked fourth among A-10 leaders. The Roanoke, Va., native recorded 20 service aces, and turned in 20 double-digit dig efforts in 2015.
"Morgan is a well rounded athlete here at Davidson," said Willis. "This honor punctuates a great academic and athletic career for her, and I couldn't be more proud. As our starting libero, Morgan took on a key leadership role on the court, and was one of the major factors for our improvements this season."
Davidson finished the 2015 season with an overall record of 12-16 and a 6-8 mark in conference play.
