ROCK HILL, S.C. — Senior Evan Watkins won three matches and the Davidson men's tennis team took part in the Winthrop Invitational over the weekend, Oct. 30-Nov. 1.
Playing their fifth Fall event, the Wildcats had six players compete during the weekend. A total of eight schools competed, including Appalachian State, Bluefield College, Furman, Gardner-Webb, Longwood, UNC Asheville and the host Winthrop Eagles. The tournament featured three singles and two doubles draws.
Watkins won the consolation side of the Memorial Singles bracket. The senior, after falling 6-4, 6-2 in his first round match against host Winthrop, regrouped to score a 6-4, 6-3 victory over UNC Asheville's Brett Landau and then a 6-3, 6-1 win against another player from Winthrop to reach the finals. There, Watkins faced his own teammate in Alex Howard and came away with a 6-2, 6-2 decision.
Howard, who also fell in his first round match, got to the consolation finals by way of a withdrawal and then earned an easy 6-0, 6-1 win against Asdrubal Marcano of Winthrop in the semifinals.
Sophomores Artem Khrapko and Jack Riazzi each played in the Winthrop Singles draw. Khrapko came within one match of reaching the finals on the main draw side. He opened with a cameback victory by the score of 5-7, 6-4, 6-3 against his Longwood opponent. Then, the sophomore grabbed another three-set victory, this time by the score of 6-1, 4-6, 6-3 to reach the semis, but his weekend ended with a 6-4, 6-4 setback to Gardner-Webb.
Riazzi fell in his first match, 6-1, 7-5, but netted a 6-3, 6-4 victory in his first consolation match against Winthrop's Steven Patrick. From there though, the sophomore fell twice to end his weekend.
In the Eagle Singles draw, Zack Zapatero reached the consolation semifinals with a 6-0, 6-2 straight set victory over Lachlan Manser of Longwood. His weekend was halted there when he fell 6-4, 6-4 to his Furman opponent.
Joining Zapatero in the bracket was Ricky Saad, who opened with a strong 7-5, 6-2 win over Jonathan Walker of Gardner-Webb. But he fell in the quarterfinals to Winthrop's Ruy Teixeira 7-5, 6-4.
All six players played in the two doubles brackets, but none of the teams came away with a win over the weekend.
Davidson concludes their Fall season with a trip to Winston-Salem, N.C., to play in the Wake Forest Invitational, Nov. 6-8.
