DAVIDSON, N.C. – Senior Anna Davis netted a pair of goals and sophomore Hannah Fisher racked up two assists to power the Davidson field hockey team (7-5, 4-1 A-10) to a 4-0 victory Friday night over Saint Louis (0-14, 0-5 A-10).
The shutout is the fifth of the season for the Wildcats, with senior Emily Leytham making two stops in net before being relieved by Connie Cape who played 11:36 and tallied three saves. Melissa Funsten also made a defensive save to preserve the shutout.
After a scoreless first half, Davidson's offense came out strong in the second half, while the defense kept things quiet in the backfield.
Davidson's first goal of the contest came just 30 seconds into the second frame. Anne Federico made a quick spin move and fired a shot past the Saint Louis goaltender that banked in the left side of the cage. Funsten was credited with the assists.
Anna Davis tallied Davidson's second goal of the day at the 36:42 mark off a penalty corner. Hannah Fisher inserted the ball to Davis, who fired a shot from the top of the arc to give the Wildcats a 2-0 lead.
Funsten padded Davidson's lead when Fisher fired a shot towards the cage that Funsten redirected into the bottom right corner.
Davis tacked on her sixth of the year in the 55th minute when Jones, working on the end line to the left of the cage, fed a pass to a wide-open Davis on the far post where she one-timed the ball into the cage for her second goal of the day.
Davidson returns to action Sunday with a trip to Boone, N.C., where the Wildcats will face Appalachian State. The game is set for 1 p.m.
